SPECIAL RECOGNITION WINNERS

] Gina Hutchins [ People Development & Training Manager, United Parcel Service

ina Hutchins serves as a superb role model for young people looking to build a future at Big Brown. 21 years ago, she was a new engineering graduate starting her first job as a UPS package delivery

G

car driver in Toledo, Ohio. Among her many accomplish- ments since then, she has earned a patent as part of a team that received an award for the development of an inventory management system, and she has effectively directed an e- Learning team that elevated the level of training expertise. For the last six years, she has been instrumental in determining a people development vision, developing a mentoring program, and leading efforts around many of UPS’ talent management activities, especially those involving high potential and diverse

talent. She has led the management trainee program, which was designed to attract and retain talented engineering stu- dents, with a focus on women and minorities.

Additionally, because of her success in coordinating recruiting, retention, development and training for UPS’ industrial engi- neering units, she was asked to join a select group of learning leaders within UPS to form a consortium of trainers. She has played a key role in the Women’s Leadership Development program.

Ms. Hutchins is active with a number of professional organiza- tions and also sits on the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology, and the Kettering University Industry Advisory Committee.

] Cheevon (Mi-Mi) Lau [ Director, Audits & Assessments , NASA Safety Centerr

C

heevon Lau started her career as a flight controller. Over a 30-year period, she has made invaluable contributions to

NASA’s human space flight and space science programs. One of her first accomplishments was to originate a set of knowl- edge documents for the ascent, orbit, and entry emergency and contingency procedures for NASA’s Space Shuttle. Ms. Lau continued to show the same leadership in teams that reported to the NASA administrator, associate administrators, center directors, and the NASA Advisory Science Council.

Other highlights of her career include negotiating the devel- opment of an automated inventory management system for the International Space Station program, where she saved $1 million in budget costs; handling key responsibilities for ad- dressing medical research into occupational health and flight experiments for the space shuttle, International Space Station,

and other exploration programs; leading a team of NASA scien- tists to discover the best way to disseminate science data, as well as a team of program managers to negotiate commercializa- tion of NASA communication services.

Ms. Lau also developed and implemented a civil servant mentor program at the Johnson Space Center. She is a new member of the Senior Executive Service. Federal government SES personnel, selected for their leadership qualifications, operate and oversee nearly every activity in approximately 75 federal agencies. Since 2003, she has been active in Lock- heed Martin’s Network of Volunteers Association. She’s a long time organizer for events such as the annual Girls Excel- ling in Math and Science conference in Northern Virginia. When Ms. McCaskill isn’t speaking about her engineering ex- periences at Career Day in local schools, she’s recruiting volunteers for Space Day and other educational forums where students learn about careers in math, science and space.
