T h e t e a m e x p l a i n t h e i r r o l e The Air Member for Personnel Briefing Team

T

he Air Member for Personnel Briefing Team (AMPBT) was formed in 2006 to deal

solely with RAF personnel matters (this includes training matters). The Team have a remit of promoting and enabling open, honest and informed communication.

Each year the AMPBT visits RAF stations and other locations and joint units where RAF personnel serve, to formally brief flight commanders on emerging issues followed by an open-forum discussion.

For this period the team split its visits into two seasons – from October to December 2007 and from April to June 2008. In this way, the team provides timely updates and complements other major communication events such as the Chief of the Air Staffs’ Forum and the Station Commanders’ Conference. The target audience of flight commanders, or their equivalents, are recognised

as those at the heart of the communication chain. Indeed, having heard the AMPBT presentation, flight commanders are then expected to pass the information to all members of their flight.

The AMPBT presentation not only includes the latest position on topical personnel-related matters, it also exposes the work of the future projects being undertaken at the MOD and Headquarters Air Command. Notably, the team’s visit is by no means a one-way download of information. After their powerpoint presentations, the AMPBT listen to feedback or ‘ground truth’ from the flight commanders about the issues that are affecting them and seek their views on the matters of the moment This session typically last around 90 minutes and provides AMP with information which can be very useful.

AMP is personally debriefed by the team and at the end of each season he directs what action is to be taken. If there is a genuine reason why the Service cannot move forward with a suggestion, then the suggestion transfers to a database to

provide a Frequently Asked Question resource for personnel. When progress can be made, it is. For example, following last year’s visits, the feedback from the AMPBT added significant impetus to the case for Service Community Support Officers on all major RAF units. These new posts (full time Reserve Service at WO/FS rank) are designed to bolster the welfare support for Service personnel and their families.
