Always complete and return court documents within the specified time so that the court is aware of your problems and overall financial situation and will be able to take these into consideration when making an order. Always attend court hearings to ensure that your case is properly represented. The case will normally be heard in a private room with officials who are used to dealing with these matters – they are not there to serve the interests of the creditor alone.
It is helpful to be represented in court, but don’t worry if you cannot afford a solicitor, just contact your local Citizens Advice who may be able to arrange assistance or refer you to alternative agencies who can assist with court representation.

he UK's personal debt is increasing by £1m every four minutes. Money worries are the single biggest cause of stress in the UK. As consumers, we are increasingly required to take responsibility for our financial affairs and manage our money well. But many of us struggle.
The publication Make the Most of Your Money from the Financial Services Authority (FSA), the UK's independent financial watchdog, has been developed to help consumers manage their finances better. The initiative offers free personal financial education by providing materials including booklets, seminars and CD-Roms, covering budgeting, saving and investing, borrowing, dealing with problem debt, protecting what you have and planning for retirement. There is no selling, no jargon, just the facts.
The FSA is now teaming up with the MOD to deliverMake the Most of Your Money to serving personnel and their families. So look out for details early next year for when all this will be available.
