Dorset chooses its best wildlife gardens


Awards have been handed out to Dorset’s best wildlife gardens. The winners of the county’s first Wildlife Friendly Gardening Competition were announced at a ceremony in Sherborne. Dorset Wildlife Trust teamed up with The Gardens Group to run the competition.

Sarah Williams, Dorset Wildlife Trust Conservation Officer and one of the expert judges, said: “We were very impressed with the number and standard of entries, showing how people in Dorset have embraced wildlife gardening wholeheartedly. We looked for a variety of food sources, such as nectar-rich flowers, seed and fruit plants, together with sources of water, shelter and suitable breeding sites.

winners succeeded in providing these, but in many different ways and in gardens of all shapes and sizes. Congratulations to all of them!”


Gardens were judged in a range of categories, including a community and ‘large extended’ category for those with additional land such as a wood or meadow. The winning wildlife gardeners, chosen from over 50 entries, are:

The awards were presented at Castle Gardens, Sherborne, by the internationally   event was sponsored by The Gardens Group, with winners receiving award plaques and wildlife friendly gardening prizes including nest boxes, wild flower seeds, bird feeders and gardening vouchers.


Dorset Wildlife Trust was founded in 1961 to protect the wildlife and natural habitats of the county and now has over 25,000 members and manages over 40    

Dorset courses on wild food and scything


An introduction to the delights of wild food in the autumn is one of the September courses on offer at  in September.


Wild Food in Autumn runs from the 10th to the 12th of September and is lead by Clio Wondrausch. The course includes learning to recognise, appreciate and prepare the rich bounty available from the hedgerows, meadows and beaches of beautiful south west Dorset.


 during the month include on 17th - 19th September Scything Weekend with Simon Fairlie where there are residential and non-residential spaces available. The course includes everything from blade preparation and mowing to stacking hay, a comprehensive introduction from a leading instructor in the field.


Then on 26th September to 1st  offers the chance to spend a week alongside qualified gardeners in the  kitchen garden and grounds. Develop skills and take time out to enjoy the warm weather!
