Egyptian Arabian Horses from Canada Awarded In Kentucky
By Kelly Bowers
Canadian endurance horses were well represented by a 16 year old Egyp- tian Arabian named HAF Allieena+/ (aka. Leena) who was rewarded for her performance in the 25 mile Pyramid Challenge Endurance Race in Kentucky. She was the first Egyptian Arabian to
cross the finish line (4th overall out of 26) earning her the prestigious Middle Eastern Ceremonial Saddle generously donated by HRM Mohammed IV of Morocco. Leena is proudly owned by Michelle Bignell of Cayuse Creek Ranch, Millbrook, ON and was ridden by a junior, Gia Petrella of Cobourg.
Even more impressive is the fact that Leena also won the ceremonial saddle for the 50 mile race in 2008. In the ten years that the saddle has been awarded, she is the only Canadian horse to have received it, and only the second horse to have won it twice. It is also worth noting that Gia Petrella is only the second junior rider to have ever won this race.
Winning was “all in the family” as Leena’s son, an 8 year old gelding named Kashif, was the second Egyptian Arabian to cross the finish line of the Kentucky race. His impressive performance earned him the ceremonial gold plated stirrup. Kashif was ridden by his owner, Bob Coleman, also of Cayuse Creek Ranch. Amazingly, the event was Kashif’s first endurance race and they finished 5th overall out of 26 starters. It seems Canada was represented very well indeed.

of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incen- tives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable expe- rience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with con- fidence. The Jump Canada Young Horse Series also gives prospective buy- ers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting. The 2010 Jump Canada Young Horse Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast. The National Young Horse Finals will take place at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament held from September 22-26 in Palgrave, ON.
