Highlights of SUAA-NYNJ Chapter’s past 35 years
A summary of the NYNJ chapter’s growth over the years would include the following: • 1974-1981 was spent in building the association, reach-
ing out to Sillimanians in the New York-New Jersey area and encouraging them to join. • September 1985-December 1991, established the Dr.
Rene Maquiling Scholarship Fund, in memory of the de- ceased past president of the chapter. Amount raised was $7,500. More than a dozen students of Silliman University have benefited from this fund. • July 1992 – the amount of $2,500 was donated to Silli- man University to repair the leaks of Katipunan Hall. • November 1992 – Silliman Alumni Report, the publica-
tion of the SUAA- NYNJ chapter, was published every six months to update members of the present and future activi- ties of the association and also to publish news briefs. • January 1993 – Book Drive. Bristol-Myers-Squibb Li-
brary Gift. The book drive gathered a total of 16,000 pounds of scientific books and journals. SUAA-NYNJ gave $1,000 and matched by UBCHEA in the amount of $2,000 for the shipping. • December 19, 1993 – During a Christmas Holiday Party
organized by then President Evangeline Bravo-Manjares and held at the Holiday Inn Crowne Palza in East Elmhurst, New
York, awards were given to several Sillimanians to honor their excellence and prominence in their respective fields. The “Who’s Who Among Sillimanians” Honorees were: Vicente Batiancila, MD; George Imperial, Ph.D.; Elmira Layague- Johnson, Ph.D.; Fele Magdamo, RN; Claire Melendez, RN; Leo Ruiz, MA; Ligaya Magbanua-Simpkins, MA; Lowell Ta- clob, MD; Dolores Tibagong, RN; and Jose Valencia, M.Div. • January 1994 – Donated $3,000 to the North America
SU Endowment Fund, jointly ventured with the Southern California Alumni group which originally donated $13,000. UBCHEA maintains and manages this fund in perpetuity, sending the earnings from the fund directly to Silliman. • 1994 – Sent the amount of $900.00 to the Office of Alum-
ni Affairs of Sillliman University to purchase a computer. • May 24, 1995 – Established the New York-New Jersey Scholarship Fund, for which the interest income goes to de- serving work students at Silliman. • 1995 – Hosted “Panday Tinig,” a choral group from
Montreal, Canada led by Mr. Paul Imperial. • 1999 – Hosted the Silliman Choristers, jointly with the Rockland Lions Club. • 2001 – Completion of the fund campaign for a professo- rial chair. This was started by Ester Suelto during her term
