SUAA-New York/New Jersey is now 35 years old! On July 21, 1974, an Ad Hoc Committee composed of

five Silliman University alumni met at the Philippine Garden Restaurant in New York City to spearhead the traditional celebration of Founders Day. The group members had their appointed assignments and they were: Dick Velasco, chair- man; Restituto Fabillar, invitation; Claire Melendez, food and decoration; Marty Visitacion, entertainment; and Jas- min Avanceña, M.D., finance. Aside from the celebration, the group also started to set their sights on organizing an alumni association. A draft of the proposed constitution and by-laws were reviewed and corrected during this meeting. On Saturday, August 31, 1974, some 30 Silliman Uni-

veristy alumni and guests attended the Cocktail and Smor- gasbord Dinner held at the Philippine Garden Restaurant in New York City. Dr. Paul Lauby, then Executive Director of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, was the keynote speaker. Copies of the proposed by-laws of the alumni association were distributed and subsequently adopted and approved by the assembly. Thus was the Silli- man University Alumni Association of New York-New Jersey formally organized. The first set of officers, led by President Dick Velasco, were official sworn into office on November

17, 1974 by Dr. Paul T. Lauby during a get-together at his residence in Montclair, New Jersey. The NYNJ chapter has been fortunate to have leaders

in its roster who unselfishly shared their time and talent to nurture the growth of this flourishing alumni association.
