Block party brings vendors, performers

Party returned to North Buncombe High School for the second straight year Sunday (July 4). From noon until dark, music
played as attendees enjoyed differ- ent festivities, while the North Bun- combe Youth Athletic Association baseball games were played on the school’s softball fields. Te block party included horse-
back rides, face painting, a per- forming group from Asheville Aeri- al Arts, food, ice cream and a main stage showcasing local bands. “[Sunday] is a perfect day for this
kind of event,” said Laura Ayers, area nature photographer. “It may not be as busy as it could be, but there’s no rain and it’s not too ter- ribly hot.” Randy Bassham, who heads up
the proposed Multi-Purpose Ath- letic Complex project for North Buncombe, organized the event again after the Town of Weaver- ville ended its fireworks and music celebration in 2009, although a downtown get-together featuring local vendors resurfaced this year in Weaverville. “Te Town of Weaverville had
to get rid of its Fourth celebration, so we decided to work with the county last year to use this space since it was empty on the Fourth,” Bassham said. “It worked so well last year that we’re back again and we plan to be here for many years celebrating with the community.” Vendors included Te Hop ice
