Make a Wish to send family to Hawaii

April, Montgomery hopes the only turbulence in her life comes from the waves crashing on Hawaii’s shores as the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Western North Carolina is sending her, her family and her best friend for a week’s vacation to the Alo- ha State. Dr. Marjorie Tripp, Montgomery’s
Asheville physician, applied to the foundation on behalf of her patient. Carolyn Harrison, Make-A-Wish’s
regional director, said once the appli- cation is received and it is determined the child has a life-threatening ailment, Make-A-Wish will meet with the child and the family and ask for their wish- es.
She said it is important for the child
to have two wishes in mind because some, such as meeting a famous per- son, can take longer. Montgomery, 15, said at first she too
considered attending a celebrity-starred awards show, but wanted to find an ex-

family because I was thinking some place warm would be nice,” she said. Her number one goal is to learn to
surf. Montgomery cheers for the junior varsity BlackHawks cheerleading team, but competitive sports are not allowed due to her condition. Te family is grateful for the oppor-
tunity to unwind. “We are very fortunate to get a
break,” mother Michelle said. Te Make-A-Wish Foundation will
be holding a ball from 7 pm to 11 pm on Saturday (March 20) at the Crest Pavilion in Woodfin. Individual tick- ets are $75.
Harrison said the Make-A-Wish
Foundation granted 197 wishes through 51 counties in Central and Western North Carolina in 2009. For more, go to
