The garden is entitled ‘We’ve no Room to Grow Fruit and Vegetables’. The children want everyone to have a garden. They grew most of the plants used in their garden and helped with the willow weaving.

“We had a really fantastic day and the standard of designs and gardens submitted by the children this year  Gardiner, Director of Horticulture, RHS. “It is so good to see such talent and interest from both schools and their children. Gardening has many advantages so I do hope that these children will remain involved.” RHS Wisley received a record number of entries. The RHS called for all young budding gardeners to design a mini- garden to fit in a 1m x 1m pallet and Wisley selected 33 entries from across 10 counties to display. This is eight more than last year when the competition was launched. The mini- gardens were planted by the young gardeners on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th May and are on show at 

Plan for autumn colour at Wakehurst Place

The walled garden at Wakehurst

It may be a little early but you can plan to see a spectacular show of autumn  country estate in the heart of the West Sussex countryside. Special Autumn Colour Weekends are being organised at the 500-acre estate to enable people to make the most of nature’s dazzling display, with guided walks,

mini-bus tours and an information stall. Highlights around the estate include red- leafed maples, amber sweetgums, and the golden yellows of Wakehurst’s national collection of birches. And as well as the sights of autumn, there are also the smells - Cercidiphyllum japonicum, known as the Candy Floss tree, is a big hit with visitors because of its distinctive smell of burnt sugar.

Admission is payable, walks and mini-bus tours are free to garden visitors, no pre- booking required.
