Gillian and Dick Pugh have made a dry garden with a ‘wow’ factor in an old cattle yard at this chalk downland setting near Stockbridge. Winding gravel paths through grasses, alliums and sun loving perennials make a fantastic show. Find the pergola draped with climbing roses and clematis near the potting shed, and other traditional plants including verbascums and echinops, structure added by shrubs and trees.

3. Braemoor, Ringwood
Unusual circular gateways lead to cottage garden borders, bold colourful planting and a beach-themed gravel area inspired by Derek Jarman’s famous garden at Dungeness in a ¾ acre garden in the pretty hamlet of Harbridge. Tracy and John Netherway and Judy Spratt have produced a garden of contrasts surrounded by open countryside, with rambling roses draped over ropes, stream by a circular lawn to a pond with decking and a patio, collections of cacti and carnivorous plants, and a good vegetable patch decorated by bantams.
