ILA 2010 says industry has optimistic future
ILA 2010 confirmed its value as a business platform with the largest participation in its 100 year history. 1,153 exhibitors from 47 countries presented an impressive range of products and services from every area of the aerospace industry. Approximately 235,000 visitors attended the fair. Compared with the previous ILA and the number of trade visitors increased slightly to 125,000. Great ideas at IMTS
The biennial International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), held between 13-18 September at Chicago’s McCormick Place, is the place where more than 92,000 industrial decision makers, including aerospace manufacturers, come to get ideas and find answers to their manufacturing problems and challenges. From the more than 1,000 exhibitors focusing on
manufacturing technology to the IMTS Industry & Technology Conference and the NIMS Student Summit, IMTS is all about educating manufacturing professionals from 116 countries. “IMTS attendees repeatedly tell us that they come to the
show to learn, to network and to find new resources and innovative manufacturing technology solutions,” said John Krisko, IMTS director, exhibitions. “We are committing significant energy and resources to make the show, the conference and the Student Summit premier educational offerings for the manufacturing industry.” Two exhibits will be of special interest to the aerospace
industry: Lockheed Martin will exhibit a full-scale model of its F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter and the Advanced Manufacturing Centre will feature a Rolls-Royce Trent engine series 3D, virtual reality presentation and display. In addition, Rolls-Royce will present a fan blade set from the Trent 900 engine and several machined components from the Trent engine series. IMTS’ exhibits are organised in nine Pavilions: the Abrasive Machining/Sawing/Finishing Pavilion; the Alternative Manufacturing Processes Pavilion; the Controls & CAD-CAM Pavilion; the EDM Pavilion; the Gear Generation Pavilion; the Machine Components/Cleaning/Environmental Pavilion; the Metal Cutting Pavilion; the Quality Assurance Pavilion; the Tooling & Workholding Systems Pavilion.

least $16.5 billion were signed during the airshow. The biggest single order was from the airline Emirates, which agreed to purchase 32 Airbus A380 aircraft at a total list price of some $11.5 billion. According to Airbus, this agreement is the largest single order ever placed in the history of civil aviation. Dietmar Schrick, president of the BDLI, believes the show is in a stronger position than ever: “ILA has again established itself as a top-ranking international aerospace event. We have recorded the single biggest order ever achieved at any aerospace anywhere in the world. The enormous growth in almost all sections of this event confirms the strength of the underlying concept, and ILA 2010 has set new standards.” Nearly 300 aircraft were on display with the new A400M
military transporter making it’s ILA debut.

Changing places
From 2012, Composites Europe will change its venue. The European Trade Fair and Forum for Composite Materials will move from Essen to Düsseldorf, together with Aluminium World Trade Fair which is held concurrently. Until now, the event has alternated between Essen and Stuttgart every year, after 2010 it will be staged alternately in Stuttgart (2011) and Düsseldorf (2012). From 14-16 September 2010 Composites Europe will be held in Essen for the last time. Together, Aluminium and Composites Europe form the
biggest platform for lightweight construction materials in Europe with well over 1,000 exhibitors. “We felt at home in Essen,” said Hans-Joachim Erbel,
managing director of Reed Exhibitions Germany, “but currently the exhibition space of high quality that are necessary for the
two events are not available in Essen, hence the move.”
