Halton Place Opens 2010 Season

With a Host of Charity Activities And Major Cash Infusion to Region

Georgetown, Ontario - An expanded schedule of events, increased prize money, upgraded facilities and rider awards are all part of the competition experience during the 2010 Halton Place show season. But the really big winners will be the local charities and both the Region and Town of Halton Hills. Prize money totalling more than $580,000 will be awarded during Halton Place’s show jumping sea- son with the major focus on the three week Canadi- an Country Classic, held August 26th to September 12th, featuring two world ranked competitions. Acknowledged as a European-style facility, Halton Place’s park-like setting will be getting a ‘leg-up’ with the introduc-

Facility owner, Timur Leckebusch, is particularly proud of Halton Place’s “Team Charity Challenge” initiative which will pair show jumpers and chari- ties together in a team relay competition designed to support 15 different local charities. This first of its kind event in Canada will be given star status during the Canadian Country Classic with a VIP luncheon and primetime location in the schedule on Saturday September 4th. All proceeds will be dedicated back to the participating charities including not only the revenue from the sponsored teams, but also the VIP luncheon and general admission tickets.

A privately commissioned study, released earlier this year, indicates that Halton Place will drive $24 million back into its region, with the majority spent by competitors and their entourage, arriving from across North and South America, who will be eating, sleeping and shopping during the three weeks of

40 years ago this month, Aidan Finn brought to the horse world a revolu- tionary publication. His son, Barry, was involved from the starts; he helped sell papers at shows and events when he was as young as seven. Today, four decades later, a few things have changed. Aidan has passed his creation on to Barry, and the paper – aptly called “The Rider” - now encom- passes all breeds of horses from all disciplines.

But it wasn’t always that way. The evolution of The Rider goes something like this: its first appearance in 1970 was as The Canadi- an Western Rider, the first Western riding magazine in Canada. Shortly after, in 1973, the Canadian Quarter Horse Journal was started in a magazine format. In 1974 a short lived French Canadi-

an version of The Western Rider was launched. In the late 70’s the format was switched to a magazine and the word “Western” was dropped from the title in order to attract English read- ers. By 1983 the Canadian Quarter Horse Journal and The Canadian Rider had been merged and was called The Western Rider/Canadi- an Quarter Horse Journal. In 1990 The English Rider was launched, and finally in 1994 The Rider emerged from the combina- tion of all three publications. According to Barry, its objective as a newspaper was – and still is – to report specifically on the Ontario equine industry with high- lights from the rest of Cana- da and the world. In 2000, with greater access to com- puters and all their magic,
