OBRA July 2010 News: Member’s Show will feature close to $4,000 in added money By Craig Widdifield.
Well it certainly has been a terrific start to the Ontario Barrel Racing Association’s season. Our mem- bership is at a high that is hasn’t seen in years and our new initiatives such as the Rookie Class and the VIP membership program are being received better than we could have possibly imagined.
OBRA Barrel Blast Off Fletcher’s Horse World June 4, 5 and 6 2010
Saturday Open 4D Run 1
In June, after Via Trailers Barrel Blast and Open House, can chasers headed to the OBRA Barrel Blast Off, which featured a return to Fletcher’s Horse World for the first time for our association in two years.
Jackpot Total = $2,188, Rider count = 118 1D Placings
The Fletcher’s are always wonderful hosts and the facility is just perfect for our big barrel racing shows. They have made some improvements of late and will con- tinue to do so throughout the year. The ground was replaced over the winter and turns out the new footing in the indoor arena was just outstanding for the weekend of hundreds upon hundreds of barrel runs and held up for every one of them with no slips or concerns. As a result of the success of the show and the out- standing facility the OBRA has decided, in partnership with Eastern Canadian Barrel Futurities, to hold our Championship Finals at Fletcher’s this coming Oct. 15 to 17. You will absolutely not want to miss out on what promises to be THE event of the 2010 barrel racing sea- son in Ontario. There are going to be some spectacular prizes awarded as well as big bucks and special events. Back to the Blast Off, Blake Vonda made a stun- ning return to the barrel race scene this season at the event by winning the first 4D run of the day Saturday with a 14.553. But times would get quicker as the day went on. Leslie Richards on Jodies Little Amos posted a 14.501 to win the Ontario Speed Horse Challenge Open 4D run later in the day and win herself a Gist Champi- onship belt buckle and $407. Actually Leslie pocketed a bundle of cash at the show with many great runs in both barrels and poles. Great job, Leslie. Keep it up! Blake Vonda was the 2D champion belt buckle win- ner with Justa Wee Dash, while Amanda Peterson on Easy Char Jet won the 3D Champion buckle and Heather Daigrepont on Blaze by Blaze took the 4D
title and buckle.
Our Rookie Barrels fastest time buckle champion was Jenna McNiven on LQH Oh Say Pepsi who won the buckle with a Sunday run time of 14.783 that earned her $94.80 to boot.

Rookie Barrels Saturday
Mother Nature unfortunately didn’t co-operate with us for the Blackstock Ford Barrel Bonanza June 25 and 25 at the Erin Fairgrounds. Friday night’s warm-up run was great with more than 60 entries. Just ask Caitlyn Johnston. She rode School’s Dun to the win with a 16.389 1st 16.389 to earn $157.81... in a warm-up run! Saturday morning started out okay, but then the weather took a turn with heavy and persistent rain. Blake Vonda was on fire once again, this time aboard Justa Wee Dash to take the win in the one 4D that was squeezed in before the show had to be called. He posted a 16.277 to edge out young Josiah Clingen on Sure Dash by just five- one thousandths of a second! Almost a dead heat! Now that’s exciting.

The Rookie Run was able to go ahead before can- celing the remainder of the events. Ben Seibert and Carols Chick Dancer won the 1D with a 17.479. And first-time competitor Jeff Smart and Drive On Tass picked up a cheque and a Kubota barrel racing cap from sponsor, Ed Stewart’s Equipment for winning the 2D in the Rookie in only his second official run ever!Congratulations Jeff. Judging by the smile on his face, we think he’s hooked. The good news out of the Blackstock Ford show is that our sponsors have agreed to roll over the added money to our Members’ Show which is tentatively set for Aug. 7 and 8 back at the Erin Fairgrounds. OBRA Direc- tor Kurt Kneidinger has been collecting money from members for this show and already has over $2,000 in hand. Combined with the leftover sponsor money from the Blackstock Ford Barrel Bonanza already there is more than $3,200 in added money to this show, and it’s grow- ing. Mark the date on your calendar. Other upcoming shows include:
