Lives READERS

Who are you? Jason Booth, Head Groundsman working at Headingley Stadium, Leeds, providing pitch facilities for both codes of rugby.

How are you? Very stressed at the moment due to the fact that we are at the change over period when both codes of rugby are playing games on the pitch. The rugby league season has just begun, and it’s a bit tiring having to change and remark both set of lines every week.

Where are you? Headingley Stadium, the home of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League and Leeds Tykes Rugby Union teams who play back-to-back matches on the ground for several months of the year.

What are you on? Currently spending a lot of time verti-

go for growth

draining with the Wiedenmann Terra Spike, an excellent machine for aerating our pitches.

Why choose this industry? I love it. It's just like Manchester United, you either love them or hate them, there is no in between.

What's giving you grief at the moment? The weather, worst time of the year for me especially having to deal with both codes of rugby being played at the same time, It is very difficult to judge what to do, the ever changing weather, cold one minute warm the next.

Favourite Book? Football my Arse by Ricky Tomlinson (The Royals TV family fame), who tells some really funny football stories.

Favourite TV programme? Hustle, a programme about con artists.

Favourite Film? Coming to America staring Eddie Murphy

Best working experience? Being voted clubman of the year in 2001 and working under the greatest Groundsman, Keith Boyce, in my early years.

Worst working experience? When I first came to the club in 2000, we had a lot of drainage problems and got a lot of bad press both in the local and national news. Also, trying to keep two coaches pleased, it’s

like trying to keep two wives pleased, nigh on impossible.

Hobbies? I still play semi professional cricket for Whitley Hall Cricket Club. I also enjoy watching the 20 /20 cricket competitions. Favourite players - Vivian Richards, Michael Vaughan and Darren Gough. I am still friends with Darren and Michael ever since we played together in our youth.

Best match? The last match between England and Australia at the Oval when we drew with Australia to win the Ashes.

Trade shows? Good, but too often

Ambitions? To provide the best possible playing surfaces for my rugby players, of both codes, to perform on. Also, to encourage young people to come into our wonderful industry.

Any thoughts on the condition of Premiership pitches this year? Basically, it has been down to two critical factors - the weather and over play. Wigan, Chelsea and Portsmouth have had to deal with too many fixtures in a short period, as many as seven games in a fortnight at the worst time of the year when the pitches are wet, cold and lacking any chance of recovery. No wonder they have lost grass cover.
