ally talented crew. We’re also just wrapping up a major structural and cosmetic renova- tion on a historic sea captain’s home here in Maine. Additionally, the ZeroBase (solar power generator) units are now in Haiti, on mountain tops in the Middle East, wintering at a camp in inland Maine, on an island in Penobscot Bay, and in various parts of the country being reviewed by various organiza- tions. This is just the tip of the iceberg. We are aiming to stay competitive in the new construction side with a line of semi- custom projects. We have molds from several extraordinary boats including: RING- LEADER, a 65 foot express sport fisherman; WHISTLER, a Hunt 54 foot cruiser; MAR- QUESA, a 54 foot Chuck Paine/Ed Joy long distance sailboat; MALA CONDUCTA, a Morelli & Melvin 62 foot catamaran; and a Deerfoot 70 by Ulf Rogeberg, a sturdy long distant cruiser meant for high latitude sailing. Unfortunately, the owner of the Deerfoot 70 has suffered financial setbacks, leaving the project with it 60 percent com- plete. We are now looking for someone who would like an exceptional Lyman-Morse built boat which can be available by next summer. We can supply a complete set of plans and estimates. She has been built to provide safe high-latitude sailing as well as comfortable coastal cruising.

The marine business worldwide is un- dergoing rocky times and we are no excep- tion. With this restructuring, we will be in a better position to guide our customers to successful conclusions of their projects. Cabot

Over in Sunset, Stonington, Buxton

Boats is getting further on an English de- signed sailboat, which was built about 1927. Buxton refastened the hull, put in a new stem, floor timbers, stanchions, covering boards and repaired the deck as needed. Next he will fair up the hull, install the engine, add a basic interior and then rig.

The oyster boat is still being worked on. The keel is complete, but he still needs to add the stern post and worm shoe. He also has reframed the center section of the boat and is now working to complete them forward and aft.

The Hewes Company of Blue Hill has been creating CNC machined planking and molds designed by Iain Oughtred. Precision cut parts make projects easier, reduce the chance of costly mistakes in expensive wood and give you a better chance of a perfectly symetrical craft. Kits consist of CNC ma- chined planking of Bruynzeel Hechthout Okoume plywood with 1.5mm face veneers. The wood is gabon, Lloyd’s approved, and carries a 20 year guarantee.

These kits are for experienced builders.

R. Stanley Inc. of Manset is presently working on an International One-Design. She is receiving some new paint and varnish before being launched for the season. This winter they replaced the engine in NATHANIEL, a 28-foot bass style power boat. They removed a 160-hp Volvo and replaced it with a 265-hp Nanni diesel. Right now they are waiting for a longer shaft so as to complete the project.

Another good project this winter was rebuilding a 12-foot Arthur Spurling design, Richard Stanley built rowboat. This boat had been tied to a dock and during a very heavy wind storm she broke free and was smashed apart. They were able to salvage some parts and used them to build, basically a new boat. On the 39-foot power cruiser Richard

built several years ago they will be changing her propeller. They are hoping to smooth out the ride and get a little more speed. About 30 boats are in storage at the yard, mostly needing paint and varnish, and this will keep the crew very busy this spring and early summer.

S. W. Boatworks in Lamoine is working on a Northern Bay 38, which is being finished out as a dive/salvage boat. They are pres- ently working on the interior and putting on

the top of the shelter. The interior will include a V-berth, another separate berth, head with shower and galley up. She is scheduled to be done this summer.

They are also awlgripping a Bullseye for a customer from Winter Harbor.

Owner Stuart Workman said that there has been a lot of interest in several of the Calvin Beal and Young Brothers’ moulds. He expected that at least one or two of these will become reality.
