Yacht Racing News By Suzanne Ellis

The sailing season is heating up here in the Casco Bay area, and like most of the sailors I’ve been talking to; I’m itching to get on the water. Everyone is busy pulling their toys out of storage and doing some last- minute tweaking. The 2010 GMORA racing calendar is posted (www.gmora.com). Rac- ing is scheduled over many weekends from June to October. We had 12 Etchells launch and expect to have 24 J24’s launch at Handy Boat in Falmouth on May 22.

Three of the Casco Bay racing vessels will compete in the Newport-Bermuda Race. Good luck to Beneteau 456 BEAUSOLEIL (Richard Parent), Sydney 38 BUZZ (Richard Stevenson) and J44 RESOLUTE (Fred Ma- deira).

Don Logan (J105) reports that “KEEMAH is almost ready to launch. We are looking forward to kicking off the season with the SailMaine regatta followed by the rest of the GMORA schedule. We have done well in the past and look forward to proving our- selves again this summer.”

Bob Kellogg and the crew of TAMA- RACK are back once again now racing a 43 Farr and Rich Ketchum aboard his new Olson 30. New to the racing scene as skippers are Selden Rose and Mary Claire Murphy-Rose, who are fixing up a 1976 Catalina 27 and look forward to racing in the MS Regatta. Enthusiastic sailboat racers from near and far are preparing for a great season begin- ning with the SailMaine Regatta on June 5! The weekends of June are full with the Cen- terboard Regatta on June 12, the Pilot Race on June 19-20 and the Harraseeket Regatta on

RACE READY IN CASCO BAY AND BEYOND June 26.

We start going the distance in the month of July with the PHRF ME’s in Boothbay on the weekend of July 17 & 18 and then the Seguin Island Trophy Race on the weekend of July 24-25.

In August, the competition begins with the Monhegan Regatta held August 12-15 and the MS Regatta on August 21. Some boats will travel to the Smuttynose and also the PHRF New England’s on August 27, 28, 29.

The racing season will come to an end with a cool breeze and the Portland Yacht Club Fall Series happening on Sept 18, 25, Oct 2, 9.

Best of luck to all the skippers and crew! If you have any racing or cruising news to report, please contact me at 207 518-9397.

US SAILING was fortunate to catch up with BMW ORACLE Racing Team Tactician John Kostecki, while his team competes at the RC 44 Austria Cup. The two-time winner of US SAILING’s Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award (2002, 1988) has a diverse and unique racing resume that includes a silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in the Soling class, a win at the 2001-02 Volvo Ocean Race as the skipper for Illbruck Challenge, and most re- cently Kostecki served as the tactician for the America’s Cup winning BMW ORACLE Rac- ing Team. Read on to hear what John had to say about his sailing achievements. You’ve won the America’s Cup, a Volvo Ocean Race, and a silver medal in the Olym-

pics… What is your favorite sailing achieve- ment and why?

Each of those achievements were very important to me at the time. They’re all very hard to do and take a lot of time, energy and focus. I still enjoy all types of racing in our sport and I’ve been around for a while now, so that means you start to have achievements across the sport. It’s satisfying now to have won the America’s Cup, won the Volvo Ocean Race and to have an Olympic medal. As far as we know, not too many people have done that. So certainly, that’s a point of pride. But for me, sailing different classes and differ- ent types of events is fun and keeps it excit- ing.

What did it mean to you as one of the few Americans competing for the America’s Cup?

It’s been a goal of mine for a while, so it’s very satisfying to achieve that goal and bring

the cup back to the U.S. I know Larry Ellison has been very keen to win it and bring the America’s Cup back to the U.S., so it is very satisfying.

How important was it for the U.S. to re- claim the America’s Cup? What does it mean for sailing in the U.S.?

Hopefully it will mean a lot. I know it is part of Larry’s (Ellison) vision to elevate the profile of the sport and use this as a chance to educate people who don’t know too much about our sport. If it’s done the right way, I think it could really improve and energize the sport in the U.S. I think we have an opportu- nity to do some good things and make it more popular.

What did you enjoy most about your America’s Cup campaign? What did you enjoy the least?
