Annual Boat Launch Celebration Students eager to test their boats

PORTLAND — Over the winter, students in Compass Project boat building classes met the challenge of working as a team, learning new skills, and persevering over a long and difficult project. As they put the finishing touches on their boats, students are getting ready for the ultimate test will they float? Compass Project boat builders/teachers Shane Hall and Jodi Carpenter and dedicated volunteers have worked with students from nine schools and organizations on six differ- ent boat designs. students launch their sailing Nutshell Pram. Compass Project programs help youth who are struggling with academic and social challenges. Working in teams, students de- velop communication skills, a facility with tools and the ability to problem-solve. They learn that a complex project becomes man- ageable, because, as one Casco Bay High student observed, “Everything complicated can be broken down into many simple tasks.” New Community Boat Building Event Comes to Belfast Harbor Fest! August 20-22 at Steam Boat Landing The Compass Project, an award winning boat building program for at-risk youth, will present a new Community Boat Building event in Belfast on August 20-22, 2010 in conjunction with Harbor Fest. The three-day event is open to 7 teams (of 5 people) each team will build its own 12-foot skiff from scratch no previous skills necessary. The Compass Project provides all materials and professional instruction. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 22nd, the event concludes with a Launch Celebration — a blessing of the boats and followed by the launch. After- wards, participants take the boats home. Reg- istration is open to the public a form is avail- able at www.compassproject.org or by call- ing 774-0682.

The Community Boat Building event is a unique combination of people from all parts of the community: for families it’s an oppor- tunity for grandparents, children, and grand kids to work together to create a memorable family project; for youth groups, the end result is a teambuilding experience and a great sense of accomplishment; for friends or groups of employees, it’s fun and challeng- ing. Volunteers are an important part of mak-

ing the event successful. Volunteer training is provided some experience with carpentry or boat building is preferable.

In January 2010, the Compass Project became part of the Spurwink Services family of programs, which includes Belfast’s Game Loft. Compass project is planning future collaborations with Game Loft in reaching out to youth and families in the Belfast commu- nity.

For the last eight years, the Compass Project, located in Portland, has provided boat building and rowing programs to at-risk youth who are referred through the Portland schools. Our mission is to use boat building to provide positive direction to youth by

encouraging the development of personal and community responsibility.

Since 2002, more than 1,200 youth from Greater Portland elementary, middle and high schools have benefited from Compass Project programs, which teachers, school social workers and principals cite for their effectiveness in helping disadvantaged and underserved youth. “The patience it takes for students to learn to build a boat translates into increased ability to stay on task and do work in the classroom,” says Tyler Thomp- son, Lead Teacher of the Westbrook Alterna- tive Learning Program.
