Noël Coward’s

Private Lives

Considered one of the enduring

successes of modern comedic theatre, Noël Coward’s Private Lives introduces its audience to di- vorced couple Elyot and Amanda. The estranged couple has each moved on with their lives when a sudden, chance meeting changes everything. They run into each other during their honeymoons with their new spouses. Real- izing they are still in love with one another, they abandon their new spouses and run off together. But people don’t change all that much, do they? Elyot and Amanda quickly find themselves plagued with the same violent arguments that originally ended their first stormy marriage. As their new spouses join forces to track them down, Coward’s sharp wit, absurd irreverence and dark comedy play out in high style.

Private Lives runs now – July 3 at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town. For tickets and more information call 619.337.1525.

Harvey

Before it became the classic movie starring Jimmy Stewart, Mary Chase’s hilarious

and endearing comedy Harvey was a Broadway hit, going on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Elwood P. Dowd is the nicest guy in town. Can he help it if his best friend happens to be a six-foot-tall invisible white rabbit? His long-suffering sister and em- barrassed niece have had enough, and hilarity is about to ensue as they try to check Elwood into the local sanitarium. A brilliant send-up of conformity, psychoanalysis and the frantic pace of modern life, Harvey is a comedy that just might make you a believer!

Harvey runs June 4 – July 18 at Lamb’s Players Theatre. For more information call 619. 437.6050.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

From the Reduced Shakespeare Company, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a delightful, fast-paced romp through all 37 of Shakespeare’s comedies, histories and tragedies. This is the show that put RSC on the map! It played for 10 years at the Criterion Theatre and became London ’s longest-running comedy. It is British humor at its finest... a bit of slapstick, a bit of improv., a bit of song and dance parody and of course, a ton of wise cracks and witty word play. Shakespeare probably can’t decide between turning over in his grave or giving them a standing ovation.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) runs June 11 – 20 at the San Diego Repertory Theatre at The Lyceum. For tickets and more information call 619.544.1000.
