entire group was culled and sold to local farmers. Only a few of the imported stallions were allowed to continue in the breeding program.

The Modern Shagya

In 1978, the breed took the name Shagya after a very

influential Arabian stallion named Shagya was bred by the Bani Sauer tribe of Bedouins. He was imported to Bábolna in 1836 and can be found in the pedigrees of most Shagyas. Prior to 1978 these horses were known as Arab-bred or Bábolna Arabians. Shortly after this the Internationale Shagya-Araber Gesellschaft, or ISG, was formed as the international governing body for the breed. Besides mounts for the military, Shagyas were bred to improve the breeding stock of the local Hungarian

farmers as well as for other Warmblood and pony breeds. Today, Shagyas can be found in the pedigrees of most Warmblood breeds—Westphalian, RPSI, Oldenburg, Trakehner, Dutch Warmblood, Holsteiner, German Riding Ponies and many others. In the mid 1980s, the Shagya stallion Amor was chosen by the Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber, Austria to add refinement to the Lipizzaner breed. Here in the
