No doubt American horse people are passionate about breeds. If they are into reining, they are probably crazy about Quarter Horses and can’t wait to indulge in the next issue of The Quarter Horse Journal. If they are into Arabians, there are a couple of beautiful Arabian-specific publications to choose from. Draft horses, Paints, Thoroughbreds, Walking horses….the list goes on and on, and each one boasts their own wildly popular magazine, even in a dismal economy.

Being an avid dressage rider and into big sport horses, I never paid any attention to those ‘other’ magazines, until one day, when I happened to walk into a tack shop. The employees were enthusiastically pouring over the latest copy of The Quarter Horse Journal, and I couldn’t believe my eyes – it was over 400 pages! “Oh, is that a special issue this month?” I asked them curiously. They sarcastically replied, “Ahhh, . . . no . . . it’s always this thick. In fact, the October issue is usually 800 pages.” Being in advertising and publishing for 20 years, I was impressed to say the least. The sport horse magazines I read regularly were lucky to be over 100 pages.

Early in 2008, I ran across a few other breed specific magazines that were likewise very healthy, and that’s when it hit me: There are so many of us who love our Warmbloods or Warmblood crosses for jumpers, hunters, dressage, or eventing, and we don’t have a magazine to call our own. The training and discipline-specific magazines have been covering news and advice for a long time, but is there a need for a magazine just about Warmbloods?

So I began a mission of research and ideas that leads us to today: Welcome to the premiere issue of Warmbloods Today, a bimonthly journal full of inspirational stories about these special horses and their owners. Our goal is to make Warmbloods Today colorful and beautiful, yet easy to read. Be prepared for entertaining stories that are in depth and heart warming – some may even draw a tear or two.

Warmbloods Today is also a forum to bring everyone in our industry together: breeders, importers, buyers, sellers, train- ers, and amateurs. We look forward to publishing various “Points of View,” and our goal is to present these issues in a fair and balanced way to improve communication with one another.

Since the category of “Warmbloods” encompasses a variety of sport horse breeds, we will feature all bloodlines of European descent, including the Iberian and Friesian breeds, and of course the American Warmbloods. We’ll always provide a list of the breed associations at the back of the magazine for your reference, along with a calendar of upcom- ing breed-supported events.

Because WT is in its infancy, let’s all cultivate the magazine together. When you have a moment, please visit us at www.WarmbloodsToday.com and give us your feedback. My dream is that you look forward to enthusiastically reading every issue of WT just like the tack shop employees. And who knows, maybe some day our magazine will boast 400 pages too.

Please enjoy “Your Connection to the Modern Sport Horse.”
