NURSES STATION
~ A Salute to
PEF Region 1 Wanda Tyson, nurse 2, Roswell Park Cancer Institute
“Roswell is a hospital dedicated
to cancer treatment. It is rewarding. You get to know the families. It is a great learning experience. It is always changing, such as paperwork is now done electronically. I’m also a breast
cancer survivor, so I’ve been on both sides, as a nurse and patient. I love my job and my kids tell me I treat my patients like family. That’s the way I would want to be treated.”

PEF represents 10,335 nurses throughout the state. They work in
a myriad of places, from hospitals to prisons, and everything in between. Today, there are as many different types of nurses as there are medical specialties. Those called to the nursing profession are dedicated people with
varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers. And they have a commitment to quality patient care. No matter if you became a nurse in the 1970s or two years ago, one thing hasn’t changed. Those

“I started as a food service worker,
fell in love with the psychiatric patients, and became a nurse to help them and to provide a richer life with more holistic care. I have returned to college to get my master’s degree in nursing education to perpetuate the joys of the profession. I love being a
nurse. With the right education and guidance, we can go boldly into the future and make a difference for our fellow man.”

“Hands-on nursing has been
replaced by more paperwork. I would recommend anyone entering the profession to get experience in a variety of nursing skills before branching out or selecting a specialized field. Nurses also need to
unite. Sometimes we focus on what we need ourselves, instead of grouping together for a main goal to better serve our consumers. We need to meet the needs of the nursing staff and decrease the stress of the profession.”

service. Working at Oxford has been the most rewarding aspect of my nursing career. I find the people in this age group to be seasoned by their lives. They have lived through war, the depression, and other great upheavals. They don’t stress over petty things, and they are extremely appreciative. Health care is very regulated right now. This is taking us further away from what everyone wants
us to do. That is making the patient come first. New nurses need to generate trust, so they can be less regulated.”
PEF Region 6 Chrissy Sainato, nurse 2, Tryon Boys Center
“I had an old aunt who was a nurse and would
tell me stories when I was a child. Nursing is all I’ve ever thought of doing. I would tell prospective nurses to be ready for long hours, lack of sleep and lots of tears. Nursing needs to get back to the art of more compassion and healing. The profession has changed dramatically. The patient benefits from the technological advances, but our
profession is lacking in delivering the nurturing and compassionate care we once had the time to do.”

and fulfilling every day. Nursing is an awesome profession and the opportunities are endless. You need to work hard and study. It’s great to leave work and have a good feeling, because you were productive and made a difference. Nurses need to have an open mind, a lot of patience. The budget is short now, so staffing is an issue. One of my personal rewards is when someone who is on
death’s doorstep makes a full recovery. I see a lot of very sick people. It’s important to take time to have fun and de-stress.”
