“This product gives you all the corrosion benefits of plastic with the strength of steel,” Cody says. “It’s protecting our customers’ assets.”
Aztec installs high density polyethylene liners that are chemically resistant and capable of handling temperatures up to and in excess of 65 degrees centigrade.
Minimal ground disturbance is required for installations and the product can be installed in lengths in excess of 1000 metres.
For Cody, entering into the family business has been a wonderful opportunity.
“I enjoy the family orientation,” he says. “We always watched my dad running his own business as we were growing up. This is kind of a project for all of us.”
Cody believes that having the different age groups that come with a family business is a benefit to the clients.
“With our different generations, we can relate to all people,” he says. “We really try to add a personal touch. People aren’t just a number or a client to us.”
Being involved in a smaller company also allows him to wear many hats.
“I can be in the office as well as working hands-on with employees and going out into the field. I’m able to cross over to different areas, which is a really nice aspect.”
The company has been steadily growing since its inception.
“In 2001, we had one crew. Now we have the capability of seven liner installation crews,” he says.
Aztec regularly sends crews to sites from Manitoba to British Columbia. Crews have also gone to the Northwest Territories and worked on a project in Nigeria.
The downturn in the energy industry didn’t affect Aztec Liner Systems as it may have some other companies.
“It was a tough year, but we held our own,” says Cody. “Although companies may not have had money for new projects, their existing infrastructure requires ongoing maintenance to keep their pipelines flowing.”
Aztec has just spun off a new company in Weatherford, Texas.
“We just got back from site visits from our first couple of projects,” he says.
The new company is called Aztec Liner Technologies and was created when the Bookers recognized a market for their services in the United States.
