Equestrian Team has had a very successful season! The Hunt Seat team consistently finished in 3rd

place out of 11

teams at West Texas A&M, Trinity University, LSU and Tulane. In addition to multiple ribbons and a strong showing by all riders, the team ended up fielding 4 spots at Regionals, a first for the team! Logan Lloyd qualified in Intermediate Fenc- es, Elizabeth Powell in Advance Walk/Trot/Canter, and Karla Shield secured a spot in both Novice Fences and Intermediate Flat. We are very excited that Logan Lloyd and Karla Shield will be continuing to Zone Fi- nals on April 10th

and we hope

that from there they will each secure a spot to compete at the Nationals Finals in Lexington, KY in May. The Team has seen

tremendous growth this year, with over 25 riders on the ros- ter. Members must show true dedication by attending weekly riding lessons, meetings, social events and regular involvement with volunteering efforts. Team riders come from varying back- grounds; some are complete be- ginners with little or no previous riding experience, while others have owned horses and/or have competed extensively. The Texas State

Equestrian Team competes at Intercollegiate Horse Show As- sociation (IHSA) shows. Mem- bers of the team are encouraged, but not required to compete. At IHSA shows, riders don’t bring their own horse, the one they’ve

trained on for weeks or years. Instead, host colleges provide the horses and tack. Riders draw numbers out of a hat and head into the show ring; they do not have a chance to warm-up or get a feel for the horse before competing on it. Team riders prepare for this show format by riding many different types of horses in lessons. Riders must learn how to ride horses of all shapes, sizes and temperaments. IHSA riders must learn how to

get the best out of each horse, and understand that each horse cannot be ridden in the same manner. Most importantly, they have to learn how to change their riding style to fit each type of horse they may draw. To prepare for compe-

titions, team riders take weekly riding lessons. Because of the uniqueness of the IHSA com- petition, it is not enough to ride your own horse in preparation for competition, in fact, most team members don’t own a horse. The Western Team rides with Mary Nelson of Nelson
