the terrible summer when Texas turned brown, what a joy to be blessed with a gorgeous spring. Thanks to the winter rains, we are once again green with the wild flowers in full bloom. Val Hackney sent pictures of her horse ranch near Bastrop. The ground is covered with Blue Bonnets. The rose bushes are outdoing themselves producing white, red and pink roses that are unreal. Nature paints a pretty picture at the Hackney’s farm.

Lori and I reminisced about the “good old days” when we rode and showed with great trainers Walter Chapman, Judy Con- nelly and Carol Chapman. Another era and another time. Tara is now 24 and works with her mother training and giving lessons to their clients. What a great team they make. I asked Tara if it was difficult working together as mother and daugh- ter. She remarked “ Not at all, when I am here working, she is my boss, when we are away from the business, she is my Mom.”

eight adults riding and a full slate of young riders – starting ages 4 to 6 – the Tiny Trotters to the Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. The young riders learn to groom, bathe and tack their horses. Talking to Lori and Tara, it is obvious they love what they do and watching the youth riders in the show ring speaks well for their instructors. They ride to win and have chalked up an impressive record for their ef- forts in Championship shows. And they have fun. Carol Maginn, na-

in need of donations

With 93 horses and a

few other critters such as goats and sheep, The Brighter Days Horse Refuge of Pipe Creek, Texas is busting at the seams. Recently a horse

in Bandera County was eu- thanized, suspected of having rabies. Dr. Conrad Nightengale put every veterinarian in the county on alert as soon as the tests on the horse came back positive.

The cost of the rabies

vaccines alone for Brighter Days runs close to $1600, and with the down turn in the economy, donations have been down.
