Pinto Horse Association of America convention business, awards & surprises

By Ernestine Owings

Last year we re-

ported about the Pinto Horse Association of America, Inc. (PtHA) annual convention in Oklahoma City because three Texans were inducted into the Pinto Heritage Foundation Hall of Fame. This year, no Texans received awards, but several unusual circumstances occurred. The Pinto Hall of Fame consists of inductees in three categories. Three judges were inducted – Grand Gibbs of California; Rick McMasters of Tennessee, and Bob Wright of Colorado. Two individu- als - Bobbiann Lawrence of Indiana and Ron McMillian of Oklahoma, and two horses – Hanks Baby Doll owned by Fieldwood Associates of Phoe- nix, Arizona and Raitaj, owned by Eileen O’Bradovich of Elk River, Minnesota. Normal business

meetings were conducted. The annual Heritage Founda- tion auction raised $5,000 for scholarships. In addition to all the normal presentations of beautiful trophies and buckles specifically designed for PtHA, three Miley horse trailers and a $1,000 scholarship were awarded. Trophies and buckles were given in twelve youth, amateur, and open categories. Twenty-five youth members attended the Youth Leader- ship Conference where they learned about the association, teamwork and life skills. PtHA introduced a

new award program, the PtHA Zone Invitational, geared to- ward rewarding exhibitors showing within their zone. Awards were given for elite, senior and junior amateurs,

and senior and junior youth. They received certificates and an invitation to the World Show to compete for the tooled show saddle with the special PtHA four-horse-head logo in the silver trim.

Brandy Smith, Find-

lay, OH and Zips Sacred Slip- per owned by Mark W. Smith won one of the trailers for Overall High Point Youth. She also earned Pinto of the Year, and received a trophy, Senior Youth High Point, and received a buckle and jacket, and was the recipient of the Coy Cherokee $1,000 scholarship. The Over- all High Point Amateur, Kaylee S. Altman and Frosted Assets, leased by Kaylee, won the sec- ond trailer. The third trailer was won by the Overall High Point Open winner, Mark W. Smith and Itsa Sacred Affair, owned by Mark.

The unexpected fun

and surprises began during the awards presentations and ban- quet Saturday night. Morther Nature’s surprise provided un- planned fun during the awards presentation. On the first day of spring, Mother Nature had not heard about global warming so she dumped three inches of snow on Oklahoma and around the outdoor swim- ming pool of the hotel. This provided an opportunity for scholarship fundraising fun. The announcer, Denny Oviattt, told the attendees that Tanner Bauman, Vice President of the Pinto Youth Organization, is a champion diver that has several high school champion titles. The announcer suggested that for a $500 donation to the scholarship fund Tanner would jump into the frigid pool. One

of the volunteer auction bid takers, Kameron Duncanson, volunteered to jump in the freezing pool if the donations reached $1,000. Everyone was caught up in the enthusiasm and Holly Usiak volunteered for a $5,000 donation. Then someone drafted Darrell Bilke, Executive Vice President of PtHA, for a $10,000 donation. A total of $1,301 was raised so Tanner Bauman and Kameron Duncanson ran through the snow and jumped into the frigid pool.

By Sunday, the sec-

ond day of spring, air flights were delayed and some flights were canceled. I had to take eight inches of snow off the hood and top of my Surburban, and thaw my frozen doors in or- der to return to San Antonio. Southern Nazarene

University again donated a two- year-old Pinto to the Heritage Foundation to raffle for the scholarship fund. She is a 2008 bay tobiano stock type mare by Doc ODaniel out of LC Trinity Miss named SNU Does Trinity Miss. The students at the Uni- versity are gentling and riding her. The raffle tickets are $5 each. The winning ticket will be drawn during the Denny Tuttle Memorial Versatility Showcase on Tuesday, June 15 at the 2010 Pinto World Show in Tulsa, OK. The winner does not have to be present to win. If the winner does not want the mare, the winner may choose $500 cash or $500 credit ap- plicable for the 2011 Pinto World Championship Show. To purchase tickets call Ernes- tine Owings at 210-688-3513, or contact PtHA at 405-491- 0111.
