n Spring 2008 I reported on a unique and innovative collaboration between Yamaha Music schools and Sandwell Youth Music to

deliver keyboard tuition in three local primary schools. The tuition was being delivered as part of the Wider Opportunities (WO) programme and in fact Sandwell Youth Music (SYM) had already successfully established this in over 40 percent of its primary schools with a portfolio of singing, strings, brass, woodwind and music technology courses. In March 2008 they were

anticipating a 20 percent growth during 2008-2009 with more expansion to follow. Trevor Jones, the then head of service in Sandwell, had been especially keen on Yamaha’s tried-and-tested keyboard materials and the support and CPD for his specialist keyboard staff. He felt that it saved money as they didn’t then need to develop their own courses and at the same time strengthened their commitment and support of the Music Manifesto. Recently I returned to visit a

couple of new schools which have joined the project and also to catch
