Music education has come a long way since the Music Manifesto but now, Marc

Jaffrey explains,

we have to help school leaders maximise the benefits

O

ver the last five years we have seen huge improvements in music education and I’ve been lucky enough to

have a ringside seat. In 2004 the Music Manifesto was formed, which campaigned to improve music-making opportunities for young people and culminated in major recommendations for improvement that encouraged the government to invest a record £332m into music education in 2007. I led the Music Manifesto campaign and much of our success was forged by making the case that music should not been seen as a ‘nice cultural add-on’ but an essential part of child development and, as the purpose of the National Curriculum is defined, 'creating successful learners, responsible citizens and confident individuals'. With advocates as diverse as Professor Lord Winston, Camilla Batmanghelidjh and Julian and Andrew Lloyd Webber the Government listened and invested. As a result, there has been a tranche of landmark programmes that have lifted over 2 million children into substantive music making.

One of our biggest ideas was that

singing should be an integral part of every child’s life and should be re- established into the culture of all our primary schools. Here was an opportunity to restore singing to the heart of a school’s ambition, culture and ethos and to show teachers that not only should they not be afraid of
