New Hampshire

Maple Weekend

The maple season is in full

swing throughout the state and will continue for another two to four weeks, until the maple trees begin budding. Although the season is short, NH is expected to produce 75,000 to 100,000 gallons of pure maple syrup. New Hampshire’s maple farm-

ers have long encouraged con- sumers to learn the source of their food. For 15 years sugar houses around the state have

been participating in New Hampshire Maple Weekend, open- ing their doors to the public and demonstrating how pure maple syrup is made from the sap of the maple tree without additives or preservatives. Throughout the maple season, visitors are welcome at most

sugar houses, but a special invitation is extended to them for

NH Maple Weekend, March 27 & 28. Guests may sample

freshly made syrup, tour the sugar houses and see how trees are tapped, sap is collected then boiled down. They’ll glimpse into the history of this centuries-old tradition and learn how modern technology has eliminated much of the need for manpower. Some sugar houses will offer a variety of maple treats, pancake breakfasts or food cooked with maple. Some have scheduled horse-drawn rides, musical entertainment, sap collecting, tree tapping demonstrations, and livestock dis- plays. For a list of participating sugar houses and what each is offering, visit the NH Maple Producers Association website at: www.nhmapleproducers.com, or call the maple phone at 603-225-3757.
