“FORGET THAT DIET AND EAT WHAT YOU NEED”
— DEMYSTIFY CRAVINGS —
by Elizabeth Terp RN
Contributing Writer
The fastest way to dis-
able a craving is to totally indulge it and observe all the after effects, all the patterns that are set in motion. Satisfy cravings with full attention; see all the thoughts, actions and feelings that accompany cravings, and the mystery begins to unveil. If you try eating less of
your craving each day, you’ll likely find yourself in a revolving door. To me, that strategy feels more like a punishment and doesn’t tell me much about why I crave it or what all the ramifications are as a result of that craving. Diet books will tell you that if you crave_______, you need more________, but that’s not the whole story. You need to find out exactly ALL that has gone out of kilter. If you just observe closely, you’ll find the free- dom exit, probably through a door you never expected. For example, sleep loss
increases the release of hormones that signal hun- ger and increase stress. Adequate sleep releases hormones that suppress appetite and break down fat. Sleep fluctuations following different foods, especially foods we crave, are important to note. often choose friends to
go with our cravings and avoid others because they do not indulge as we do
or we find that we don’t do anything without the crutch of a craving. If you crave coffee, and you can’t stop at one cup a day, does coffee choose your friends and activities? Are there people you don’t mix with or activities you avoid be- cause there’ll be no coffee included, or pasta, or fries? Some cravings go in clus- ters like coffee/ chocolate/ pastries or pasta/ breads. Demystifying cravings comes right down to claim- ing freedom: freedom to choose interesting friends, freedom to sleep well, free- dom to explore new activi- ties, freedom to enjoy food, freedom to keep active, freedom to think clearly,
freedom to live well…. Who knows? As we rou-
tinely demystify whatever cravings emerge, we may all have the healthiest year ever.
