Dear Erick,
I constantly battle flat hair and have tried several
products that claim to give great volume, but they
just don't last. My hair just gets flat as the day goes
on. Any suggestions? - Pump Up the Volume?
Dear Pump Up the Volume,
Flat hair is a problem that many people face. Although there
are a lot of great volumizing products on the market, some are full of
hot air rather than height. The biggest problem that I've found with
volumizers is that they work on the outer layer of the hair (cuticle) and
do not work in the interior layer (cortex). The products actually cause
build-up and make your hair gummy and flat, especially in humid
weather. One product that I like is the Rusk Thicker line which con-
tains Thermplex. Thicker works on the cortex layer and seals down
the cuticle layer of the hair. This helps to protect hair from the tough
elements in SWFL. You'll enjoy the benefits without the feel of a
foundation product in your hair. It helps to change the hair texture
memory for up to 24 hours!
The best way to produce volume in your hair starts with the cut.
The enemy of volume is weight. Luckily, weight can be removed
through texturing hair in a precision manner. It is important to under-
stand that texture is a broken line. However, this "broken line" is just
as precise as a straight line, meaning that cutting texture in hair
should not be done blindly; it should match your style and head shape.
I've seen texture work against the cut too many times! By thinning the
hair too much, over-texturing can produce the opposite the desired
results. Make sure your stylist understands this by simply asking if he
or she is comfortable texturing hair.

look forward to meeting you in the salon.
