Icicles hang from a ledge Friday (Jan. 16) near Bull Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
By Matt Tate
North Buncombe residents felt
the chill of winter last week with
the coldest spell in years on Thurs-
day (Jan. 15) and Friday (Jan. 16)
followed by a round of snow earlier
this week.
Single-degree temperatures and
below-zero wind chills last week
kept many indoors. Parts of the
French Broad River in Woodfin
and Alexander were frozen. Some
water pipe problems were reported,
including a burst Saturday (Jan. 17)
at a residence on Riverside Drive in
Woodfin, as well as bursts Monday
(Jan. 19) on South Main Street and
Wildwood Park in Weaverville.
An inch or two of snow covered
the grounds earlier this week, can-
celing schools, but not causing any
major traffic problems.
Two geese try to find a place to swim Friday (Jan. 16) in
the frozen waters of the French Broad River.
