meet at 10 am on Saturday (Jan.
24) in the Big Ivy Community
Center at 540 Dillingham Road to
discuss Sherry Austin’s novel The
Days Between the Years.
The conceit of a documentary
film focusing on women’s lives
between the Great Depression and
the end of World War II frames the
story, using the character of Trixie
Goforth, an elderly, cantankerous
woman who has the opportunity
of being interviewed.
Austin creates a great wash of
nostalgia as she takes the reader,
through the eyes of Trixie, back
into her past. We learn about her
regrets, her triumphs, and her
endurance. We enjoy the wisdom
that she dispenses in her rambling
reminiscing, for, as the book
opens, Trixie has just defied her
children, who want to take away
her driving privileges and put her
in an “old folks’ home,” by driv-
ing from her home in Spindale to
Asheville on a snowy day to see her
doctor who delivers some ominous
news to her.
Nancy Dillingham.
The heart of the book is Trixie’s
recollections about her pre-ad-
olescent years and her meeting
up with a young hobo whom she
wishes to hop trains and run away
from home with. Though she
has married two times, Trixie has
always remembered “Bo Joe” and
still has the wooden ornament
that he carved for her so long
ago (the story takes place around
Christmas).
The book, both humorous and
poignant, is more than a catalog-
ing of events in Trixie’s life; it is
also a study in motivation, charac-
ter, and a comment on the part fate
plays in one’s life. It is altogether
fitting, albeit ironic, that she finds
herself stranded in a snowstorm
in a rest home on Christmas Eve
visiting an old friend, pondering
in her heart, just like Mary, her
own “revelation.”
