Tony Bowden BSc ACP EngTech FIED FCollP FRSA LCGI
CertEd
It is with great sadness that we report on the recent death of our Vice Chairman of
Council, Tony Bowden. Tony was a long-term, active member of the Institution, having
spent 20 years on the Education and Training Committee and seven years on both
the Membership Committee and Council.
Tony joined the Institution as an Associate in 1976, while working as a Project
A perfect
Design and Estimating Engineer within the food and chemical industries. However,
Tony always had a passion for introducing people to the wonders and benefi ts of
engineering and design and, in 1984, he began a new career in education, as a teacher
match
of Engineering Drawing and Design Technology in schools and educational colleges.
His enthusiasm and knowledge eventually led Tony to become a Design Technology
Health and Safety Consultant and he trained and accredited teachers in all practical
areas of DT. His latest role was to advise schools on the design and layout of new
DT laboratories and classrooms.
Tony worked tirelessly for the Institution, not only being a very regular attendee
at meetings, but also by advising staff and colleagues on relevant standards and
assessment procedures and by judging student submissions for awards and
competitions.
He was a very well-liked member of the IED team, witty, helpful, considerate and
intelligent, a reliable and hard working Committee member and a great contributor
to the work of the Institution.
Tony will be missed by all who knew him at the Institution, and the condolences of
the staff and members go to Tony’s family at this very diffi cult time.
