Shadow Creek falls into a natural swimming pool. After a moderate 3-mile hike, its cooling waters are inviting – especially with its location off the beaten trail.
DAY TRIPPING REDS MEADOW
The Devils Postpile National Monument is inarguably the major attraction that brings 100,000
visitors annually to the Reds Meadow area. Here are other points of interest to make a day trip
began on the mandatory shuttle ride to the valley worthwhile.
Consider beginning with shuttle stop #10 for breakfast; moving onto stop #1 for a long hike to
gorgeous Shadow Lake; next catching Rainbow Falls midday with its rainbow (stop #9); enjoying
a hot shower at stop #8; a nature walk at Sotcher Lake (stop #7); and finishing at stop # 6 for
Minaret Falls, Soda Springs and Devils Postpile. Such a day would be thoroughly exhausting and
should naturally conclude with pizza and cold beer in Mammoth.
A few suggestions to make the day more comfortable: Wear a bathing suit under clothes in case
of an impromptu dip; bring a picnic lunch and 1-2 quarts of water; wear sturdy hiking boots; and
be on the first shuttle. Plan for a full day, and pack mosquito repellent.
