Fishing Fun for Everyone
One of the biggest draws in the Eastern
Sierra is fishing. Visitors come to the area to
take a boat out on Crowley Lake or drop a line
in Hot Creek. Residents plan whole trips into
the backcountry to catch a Golden Trout or
a Brookie. But kids can’t be forgotten when
it comes to the joys of fishing: hiking to the
perfect spot, being out in the sunshine by the
water, learning the patience to wait for a bite,
spending time with the family, and trying to
catch dinner instead of buying it at the store. All
of these are not only fun but provide great skills
and physical conditioning for kids, but don’t tell
them that – they’re having too much fun!
This summer take time out to include
the kids in that fishing expedition or even
just a quick stop at a lake for an hour or so.
For a special treat, attend the Kid’s Fishing
Festival on Saturday, July 25 from 8 to noon
at the Snowcreek Ponds on Old Mammoth
Road. For the 22nd year, this event provides
a great way for the young ones to learn
about fishing. With fishing poles and tackle
provided, local guides and experts teach the
kids what it’s all about with a goal that “every
kid catch a fish.” The Department of Fish and
Game brings its trout tanker to stock the two
ponds, and representatives will talk about its
Passport Program, which includes the other
fish in California. Last year as many as 500
kids attended the event, says Gaye Mueller,
spokesperson for the Eastern Sierra Hatchery
Foundation-presented event. With their mission
KID’S FISHING
to preserve and promote fishing in the Eastern
Sierra, they can’t go wrong by starting with the
FESTIVAL
youth. After all, they are the future fisher people
of tomorrow
Saturday, July 25
.
