Summer Workshop II
I am pleased to announce that Summer Workshop II will take place on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, from 8:00 to 4:30 pm., at the Molly
Pitcher Inn located in Red Bank, N.J.
The roster of presentations is even more diverse than last year featuring sessions in Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Classroom Music,
Music Technology, and Special Education implications and techniques for Music Educators. All sessions are designed to be interactive, in a
relaxed summer setting, so come prepared to utilize your voice, instrument, and musical skills in activities designed to be brought back to
your classroom.
The Summer Workshop webpage is active with the listing of sessions, as well as registration information, which can be completed total-
ly online this year. Registration opened on April 1 and will remain open through June 1. We have limited capacity at the Inn and were close
to capacity with 80 participants last summer…register early…at www.njmeasummerworkshop.com !
A Note of Appreciation
At this writing, I am concluding my six year tenure on the NJMEA Executive Board, which has been a phenomenal personal and pro-
fessional experience. It is with sincere gratitude that I thank the NJMEA membership for granting me the opportunity to represent our
statewide constituency at the local, regional, and national levels, as the President of NJMEA. The countless activities that I participated in,
coupled with the host of professional associations and friendships that developed, would never have been a possibility.
Most importantly, having the responsibility to support the importance of a musical education for all children was paramount.
I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge my colleagues in the NJ Music Administrators Association. My initial experience with
NJMAA, and the valued conversations and alliances which followed over the years, formed the basis and awareness of the host of exemplary
individuals and activities which are the heartbeat of the NJMEA organization.
As I approach my fortieth year in Music Education, and I reflect on the collection of experiences and memories that have transpired, the
NJMEA experience will always stand out as one of the premier examples of a rapid and fruitful career. Best wishes to my colleagues Bob
Frampton and Bill McDevitt for a successful administration, and to all of you for continued success and enjoyment in your musical endeav-
ors.

It seems such a short time ago that I wrote our first article welcoming everyone back to a new school year and here we are looking at
another school year coming to a close. It is a pleasure to say that our membership continues to grow and attendance at our general mem-
bership meetings continues to increase.
Credit for the increase comes from the bi-monthly workshops held. This year our workshops covered a wide variety of topics including:
“Student Retention” presented by Peter Griffin and Ron Dolce; “Grant Writing”, presented by Anna Aschkenes from the Middlesex County
Cultural and Heritage Commission; and “Engaging Professional Development Across Arts Discipline, presented by Donna Serio and Bob
Pispecky. Members of the Art Administrators of New Jersey were invited to attend this meeting and share the information presented.
