What’s Happening In
The Music Industry
Alfred Names Michael Spresser as Choral Editor
Michael Spresser has been named Alfred's Pop and Lawson Gould Choral Editor. Spresser has an extensive back-
ground in choral editing and production and most recently served as a Choral Editor for Hal Leonard Corporation. In
addition to his publishing experience, Spresser taught high school and middle school music for over twelve years and
has been an active volunteer with America Sings, Inc. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music from the College
Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will be working from his home office in Cincinnati to be near his
family.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of the Alfred School Choral Team,” said Spresser. “I look forward to working with
Sally Albrecht, Andy Beck, and Martha Buchta.” Spresser is replacing long-time Choral Editor Jay Althouse, who is leaving to devote his
energy to writing and arranging choral music, vocal books, classroom products, and elementary musicals on a full-time basis.
Althouse has been with Alfred for nearly twenty years, and has been Alfred’s top-selling choral and vocal writer/arranger during this
time. When Alfred acquired the Warner Bros. Print Music Catalog in 2005, he increased his part-time status to the full-time position of Pop
Choral Editor. “I could not be happier that Michael will be joining Alfred,” said Althouse. “He brings a wealth of experience as a publisher,
editor, and public school teacher, and he will be a terrific asset for Alfred. I look forward to writing for him.”
Dave Black, Editor-in-Chief commented, “We are thrilled to have Michael as part of our outstanding choral acquisition team, and we
look forward to the growth of our Choral Catalog with his creative input.”
Carl Fischer Music Presents New Edition of Joachim Andersen’s
24 Progressive Studies for the Flute
Carl Fischer Music presents an exciting spin on a classic teaching method with a new edition of Joachim Andersen’s 24
Progressive Studies for the Flute, Op. 33 (WF84 - $9.95). While all of the original etudes are included, flute pedagogue Professor
Charles DeLaney has expanded them to include notes in the upper range of the instrument, updating this book for the flute’s
modern incarnation. DeLaney also lends his sharp wit to this edition, having cleverly named the etudes and also has provided
helpful and humorous practice notes for each. In addition, this book also features “DeLaney’s Daily Dozen,” a set of practice
exercises guaranteed to improve technique and musicality. Essentially a complete method built on a proven collection of etudes, Delaney’s edition of
24 Progressive Studies for the Flute, Op. 33 is absolutely essential for serious flute students, and this fresh new edition will be welcomed by students
and teachers alike.
Flutist, composer, and teacher Charles DeLaney received his Master of Music Degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and was a well-
loved fixture in the flute teaching world from his first stint at Earlham College in 1950 up until his death in 2006. An active member of the National
Flute Association, Delaney served on the board of directors as Vice-President and President, and received the organization’s distinguished Lifetime
Achievement Award in 1998. As a flutist, Delaney performed as orchestral principal flutist, soloist, and chamber musician throughout the United
Stares, and as a composer, he wrote works for almost every genre of music and every instrument. Finally, he served as Music Director and Conductor
of the Albany (Georgia) Symphony Orchestra from 1979-1988.
Carl Fischer Music has a growing and diversified catalog of musical products, now expanded to include DVDs and compact discs, as well as its
