recent years.
Asencio’s work always begins with a ‘gesture
drawing’; he then mixes colour and applies the
oils according to his temperament. As well as
brushes and a palette knife he uses a range of
unconventional tools, thereby transforming a
traditional painting into one possessing his cutting
edge signature style. Close up these paintings are
all about modernity, with their bold juxtapositions
of strident blocks of colour and aggressive
painterly texture. But take a step back, and
they fuse into figurative images of unexpected,
sometimes overwhelming beauty.
