March is American Red Cross Month
The best tips you can teach your family are the preparedness action steps that can save their lives. With March being Red Cross
month, you and your family should know what it means to be prepared for an emergency or disaster. The American Red Cross has
created a simple phrase to help you remember what to do to get prepared---Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed.
Get a kit: Having the right emergency supplies on hand when a disaster occurs can make a big difference.
Your family’s kit is a backpack full of supplies to help your family comfortably survive outside of your home for up to three days
because of a fire, flood or other disaster. It should be kept in a place
where you can quickly grab it and go. The five basic supplies in every
bag should include: water and food (that will not spoil), important
medicines, flashlight, first aid kit and battery-operated or hand-crank
radio. In addition, you should add what you know your family would
specifically need in an emergency.
Make a plan: Planning ahead will help you have the best possible
response to disaster.
Have a family meeting. Make a list of emergency numbers to call. Map out all possible exits form your home and then designate a
meeting place outside of your home. Once your plan is in place, practice! Together, practice grabbing your kit, leaving your home safely
and meeting at designated locations.
Be informed: Know what may happen and how you can help.
Learn what emergencies can happen in your city or neighborhood. Are you prepared for a hurricane? Fire? Flooding? Know
different ways to get important facts during an emergency. Do you know your local weather radio station? What about a TV channel
that plays emergency news?
Learn First Aid and CPR. During a major disaster loved ones can be hurt and emergency
response delayed. Knowing simple first aid techniques can give you the skills and
confidence to help when someone is injured. Knowing CPR may help you save a life.
