Page 6 BREAKAWAY PROGRAM
At the start of this term two separate groups of students from Years 9 & 10 began the Breakaway Program, which will operate at Cowra TAFE every Thursday during Terms 2 & 3. 2012 is the 10th year of operation for this award winning program. Sally Delaney (TAFE) is co-ordinating both programs with the assistance of other TAFE staff, Cowra High’s Robyn Coffey & Harry Lambshead, along with staff from other agencies such as Health, Headspace and the PCYC.
The girl’s program group consists of ten Aboriginal students from Years 9 & 10 while the boys’ program has eleven Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students from Year 10. The boys’ program is based around a practical automotive project. Thank you to Harry Lambshead who has donated an old Holden ute for the boys to repair and rebuild. The successful completion of both programs will lead to the award of a TAFE Certificate II which will be a useful and valuable credential for future careers.

COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER WESTERN REGION SQUASH FINALS
The Cowra High School girl’s squash team performed very well in the 2012 competition making an appearance at the Western Region finals ~ they are seen here warming up before the tournament. The players are Kate Lewis, Skye Lanham, Joanna Treasure & Laura Mikoda with Micaela Gillespie as reserve (not pictured).
In a
spirit of friendly competition and excellent conduct our girls played Forbes High School ~ a school renowned for producing exceptional squash players. Our girls played above and beyond their ability but in the end they were outgunned by the girls from Forbes High. We were honourable in defeat and the girls did themselves & their school proud thanks to their effort and court behaviour. Micaela was also able to play a game against Orange High and this gave her invaluable experience in playing at a higher level ~ I am sure she will become a key member of future Cowra High Squash teams.
Once more it was a most enjoyable day with these students and I thank the parents again for their support and help with transport ~ Shaneen & Brett Treasure, Leanne Mikoda and Jane Gillespie.

TACKLE A BOOK There is an exciting new workshop
coming up early next term for Aboriginal boys in Years 7 to 11 called Tackle a Book. This will be the latest initiative of Read With Me 32.
On 27 July at River Park football (rugby league & AFL) will be used to encourage boys to read books. After reading a book and completing a report about it, the boys will be given a choice of a league or AFL ball. Students chosen to participate will be based on school attendance, behaviour and uniform.
