COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

On 10 April 2012, a group of 28 from Cowra High School consisting of students, teachers & parents departed Sydney bound for Rome, Italy.

Once we landed in Rome we met Mr Muhling, Mr & Mrs Wooldridge and our tour guide. We caught a coach to the hotel near the centre of the city and then went on an orientation walk around the CBD. While doing this we visited Piazza Novana and the Pantheon. After this we went back to the hotel and then had dinner in a nearby restaurant.

Day 2 saw the group visiting the famous ancient monuments such as the Colosseum & the Roman Forum. Other places visited were Circus Maximus, Trevi Fountain & the Spanish Steps.

Day 3 saw us visiting the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peters Basillica in the morning followed by a 4 hour bus trip to Vico Equense on the Bay of Naples.

Day 4 had us catching a train to Pompeii for the morning where we were guided through the historic site ~ after lunch saw us in Sorrento with free time for the afternoon. An evening game of soccer was played with some local kids in a courtyard in Vico Equense.

Day 5 we travelled to Amalfi along the coast road which was really narrow & windy. Some people went on a 40 minute boat cruise along the coast.

In the

afternoon we went to Herculaneum, which was also the city buried by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius.

Day 6 was an early morning to Naples airport to fly to Munich, Germany. The flight was delayed by 3 hours, leaving us with time to explore the city of Naples ~ this caused a reshuffle of the program.

On arrival at

Munich we met the best bus driver of the trip and travelled to Regensburg.

Day 7 we travelled to Nuremburg where we were guided through the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, we visited the uncompleted Congress Hall, The Great Road & The Zeppelin Field. In the afternoon we had time to walk through the Documentation Centre which is in the Congress Hall. Later we visited Kaiserburg Castle and then had free time in the Old Town of Nuremberg.

Day 8 we did The Third Reich walking tour in Munich and in the afternoon we went to the concentration camp at Dachau ~ this was a moving, emotional experience for us all. Unfortunately we had very limited time at Dachau to explore.

Day 9 we had an early start again, for a flight from Munich to Brussels, Belgium. We then travelled by coach to Ypres. We had time to explore this town and buy some famous Belgium Chocolate. In the evening we attended a memorial service at Menin Gate ~ this was also a proud and moving experience.

Day 10 we travelled to Paris via the Western Front stopping at Villiers-Bretonneux, and the grave of one of Lucas Hayes’ relatives ~ this was a great opportunity to honour a fallen soldier who fought in World War I.

Day 11 was an exciting day because we climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower and had the afternoon at Euro Disney. Everyone enjoyed this day!

Day 12 had us visiting the Louvre and seeing famous artworks such as the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. In the afternoon we walked through Notre Dame Cathedral and explored the Latin Quarter (Left Bank). After dinner we had an evening cruise on the Seine River ~ this gave us a magnificent experience to see Paris at night. highlight of this was the lights on the Eiffel Tower.

The

Day 13 was a sad day because it meant leaving & the end of a wonderful trip, travelling home via Abu Dhabi to Sydney.

This was a great trip where everyone had a wonderful time. A huge thank you to Mrs Meiklejohn and Ms Patterson putting in a huge amount of time & effort to organise the trip and giving up their holidays to help us travel to the other side of the world.
