FROM THE EDITOR
Editor's Message A Dose of Gratitude
As some know I've been covering the pharmaceutical industry for over 25 years. I've seen a lot of change over those years, have visited many pharmaceutical facilities, attended numerous trade shows and conferences and talked to thousands of people. Over the years I have come to be a staunch supporter of the industry. Unless I've been totally gullible over the years the people in this industry truly have the interests of the patient as their top priority. Of course, companies are looking to make a profit, that's how they stay in business, expand, create jobs, and bring new and better products to market. Recently, there have been a few instances of glaring, and outlandish, price gouging but I think as a whole the industry has a rather good moral compass.
And while many outside of the industry will rail against their pricing, or dredge up conspiracy theories that the industry has been hiding cures for cancer for years, I just don’t buy it. You see, when it gets personal, you don’t care as much about the price, you care that the money spent has produced a product that works for you.
My story begins about eight and half years ago when I was diagnosed with diabetes. It was a shock because my family doesn’t have a history of diabetes; but the test results don’t lie; I was put on metformin, told to monitor my blood glucose, and get diabetes education. I was also told by my doctor that eventually I would need insulin. Hearing that information scared me; the thought of injecting myself every day for the rest of my life was just something I could not face at the time.
Well, fast forward to today and the time has come. The diet, exercise, and medications are just not working like they did when I was first diagnosed. I knew the time was coming that I would need to go on insulin. So, I was prescribed an insulin injector pen. And I have to say it is truly a remarkable piece of engineering.
Within this pen-sized drug delivery device is insulin, and a precise metering device. The pen needles are easy to attach and remove. Best of all it’s practically painless to use. I look at this device in awe and amazement. This industry, that is so often maligned, has produced this product for me. It’s easy to use, I don’t need to see a doctor for an injection, and best of all – it’s designed to keep me healthy.
So, to those in the industry, that brought this product to market, I say “Thank you”. Your work is appreciated. Finally, to readers of Pharmaceutical Outsourcing I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.
