Latest automated analyser launched M

alvern Instruments has launched the new Zetasizer AT, a robust, online, automated analyser

that uses dynamic light scattering (DLS) to automatically measure the size of nanoparticles in suspensions and emulsions. The new analyser provides timely and reliable data that enables tracking of processes in the sub-micron size range, such as emulsification, dispersion, milling and homogenization, while at the same time eliminating the delays and inefficiencies associated with manual analysis. The net result is improved process understanding, streamlined process development and improved product quality.

In many applications, particle size is a critical determinant of nanoparticle performance. When producing nanoparticles or droplets via size reduction, detecting the endpoint of a batch process or tracking stable conditions during continuous

production in a timely manner is important. Suitable process analytical technology (PAT) can help understand the dynamic behaviour of the process, enabling reduction in the amount of testing during development and improving consistency of manufacturing operations.

“The introduction of an online DLS system is an important advance for those developing and manufacturing nanoparticles,” says Alon Vaisman at Malvern Instruments. “The ability to measure particle size in a timely way, using a well-established and popular method enables more precise trending of size changes, supporting faster, more robust process development and competitive well-controlled manufacture, whether batch or continuous.” The new Zetasizer AT builds on

Malvern’s Zetasizer Nano DLS technology, and in-house expertise in engineering trusted online instrumentation. Mobile, fully

NEW inline particle sizer T

he new IntelliSizer inline particle sizer from Xoptix has innovative technology that allows self- monitoring, self-diagnostics and self- cleaning technology, to ensure maximum uptime and 24/7 real-time analysis. The IntelliSizer offers a new level of

intelligence to in-process particle sizing, which its maker believes is a first within the powder processing industry.

The automated CellClean technology is at the heart of the self-monitoring. If the instrument requires cleaning, the CellClean automatically provides a pulse of air to instantly clear the sample cell chamber, so that real-time monitoring using laser diffraction can continue. Taking this one step further, the particle sizer also checks the current operational status using the diagnostic database. If there are any anomalies in analysis performance, alerts are generated so that a process engineer can take action. The self- diagnostic

automated, computer controlled sampling system enables measurements across the size range 1nm to 1,000nm and can be easily operated in research laboratories as well as on the manufacturing floor. Versatile automation control and integration software, Malvern Link II provides a convenient user interface and ability to directly report measurement results into a remote system. n

intelligence, coupled with the ability to clean itself automatically, gives the IntelliSizer the maximum uptime and the reliability that processes need for optimisation. The system measures the complete particle size distribution at a rate of 2,000 times per second, producing real-time data of the state of the process. By feeding this data to the PLC or DCS and automating the control of the separator such that in-spec product is produced all the time, the energy expended in insurance over grinding is thus eliminated. An added advantage is that the residence time of the product in the mill is reduced, such that throughput can be considerably increased. n
