CONVEYING FEATURE

BALER AND CONVEYOR solution meets customer demand

An environmental services company which provides shredding and full on-site waste management has installed a third baler/conveyor solution from Middleton Engineering

“Our ability to schedule and service client recycling contracts smoothly and support their environmental goals for diverting waste from landfill depends on the right equipment,” comments operations director Tony Gibbons. “Yield UK has used balers from

Middleton Engineering since 2008, service has always been fast and efficient and they were the obvious choice for this latest machine.”

With its 60 tonne press force and compact design the Scapa HB60 is ideal for Yield’s requirements

E

nvironmental services company Yield UK based in Widnes Cheshire which

provides security shredding and full on-site waste management services to a range of public and private sector organisations has taken delivery of a third baler and conveyor solution from Middleton Engineering to meet expanding customer requirements. The fully automatic Scapa HB60 channel baler together with an in floor feed conveyor designed and manufactured at Middleton Engineering’s Somerset factory will be operated on behalf of the fast growing B&M retail discount brand which now operates over 450 stores in the UK. Under an outsource contract Yield UK is helping to ensure

that all back hauled packaging waste including paper, plastic and card at B&M’s new site in Middlewich is sorted, baled and diverted from landfill.

ROBUST SOLUTION With its 60 tonne press force and compact design the Scapa HB60 is ideally suited to Yield’s requirements, ensuring the best use of limited space and delivering highly compact and stable mill size bales of card and plastics to optimise available storage and onward transportation. The robust solution is designed for easy maintenance with a typical throughput of 4-6 tonnes per hour depending on waste stream and bale weights of 450-550 kg.

INTEGRATED IN-FLOOR FEED CONVEYOR Middleton Engineering is responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of the baler with an integrated in-floor feed conveyor to optimise loading along with full operator training. The company will offer ongoing service and telephone support to provide Yield with expert backup to minimise issues and potential service disruption. “Repeat business from happy clients is a good sign that we are doing things right and we are delighted to be extending our relationship with Yield UK,” says Middleton engineering director Mark Smith. “The Scapa HB60 is an extremely reliable baler incorporating our proven hydraulic wire tying solution to produce consistent high quality bales. Its small footprint and low headroom make it an ideal solution for a wide range of recycling environments.”

SPEED CONTROLLER OPTIMISES GRAVITY ROLLER CONVEYOR OPERATION

Interroll unveiled its magnetic speed controller at LogiMAT 2016: the MSC 50 is a patented, technically and economically superior solution offered in response to demand for more efficient and cost-effective material handling systems. Easy-to-install and maintenance-free, it delivers process reliability and attractive ROI. The MSC 50 is said to be the most cost-effective solution currently on

the market for controlling the speed of boxes and plastic trays traveling on gravity roller conveyors and spirals or the end sections of sorters. Suitable for handling goods weighing 0.5-35 kg (1-77lb), the system ensures lightweight packages move smoothly while limiting the speed of heavy goods traveling along the conveyor. These features make MSC 50 suitable for warehousing, e-commerce, postal service, food and pharmaceutical operations and for customers that use flow racks for heavy containers. Gravity roller conveyors are often installed to handle the final stage of

goods moving through sorting systems. To eliminate extra costs resulting from, for example, goods damaged because they are moving too quickly on

those gravity conveyors or extra travel time to pick up stuck goods, these end sections must work perfectly. However, most gravity conveyors have limited functionality. Because of an increasing diversity in the size and weight of goods running on gravity conveyors Interroll saw a need to develop a speed controller. The MSC 50 features an eddy current brake which makes it maintenance-free while double shielding completely prevents magnetic emissions. Because of its bidirectional braking function it cannot be mounted incorrectly. In addition, the MSC 50 speed controller can be retrofitted to existing gravity conveyor installations. Different lengths and quantities can be used to scale the design for your

application. The MSC 50 is designed for a maximum load of 500 N, infeed speed of 2.5 m/sec; maximum input is up to 3,000 units per hour.
