There’s much, much more, and that’s only in the first half of the DVD. Next we learn how to fire up, water, lube,

and otherwise get a steam locomotive ready to roll. Best practices for braking, acceleration and smooth handling are all covered here. We continue on as it’s time to drop our fire, clean the grates, and dump the ashes. If you like trains even remotely, then this

title is bound to both astound and amaze you. I kid you not when I tell you that this is argu- ably the most enjoyable and most entertain- ing DVD on railroading you are likely to ever own. That takes nothing away from any other DVDs you own; rather it is just that the ma- terial covered and the presentation itself are second to none.

Two things worth mentioning here: (1) Much of the steam power shown is from

foreign railroads. Now some of you might be saying “Yuck, I don’t like that funny-looking foreign stuff,” but you would be doing yourself an immense disservice. I, for one, have come to appreciate the nuances of international railroading. It focuses on building locomotives in Eu-

rope and Great Britain because that is where new locomotives and new boilers are still being built. This isn’t happening in the U.S. to any significant extent. You will find that the stack talk sounds fantastic and that the know-how and technology to support steam preservation originated abroad. The fact that these locomotives are from countries you may or may not have any interest in will play no part in the immense value and enjoyment you will get when you watch these. Although it is primarily European, it does have scenes from the U.S., Great Britain, South Africa, and more. Also, building a boiler or firebox and other work is essentially the same no mat- ter where it is done. Externally, European engines may look different, but inside, under the skin, they are all largely the same as our favorites in the U.S. and Canada. (2) Carl Franz and his buddy Bob Berni-

er are selling these as a labor of love. Once again your fellow railfans have taken it on themselves to bring a small-run, highly spe- cific title to the market and they deserve to be thanked for it. You and I most likely would never had heard about these disks if it weren’t for these guys. This DVD was originally produced in Eu-

rope by van den Burg Beeldproducties and has been a big seller in Europe. Because Carl and Bob thought it was awesome and unlike anything available on the U.S. market, they had it professionally converted to NTSC for- mat for sale in the U.S. I think that was pret- ty cool of them to do. After all, you and I know your railfan dollars can only go so far in to- day’s challenging economy. Having said that, it’s these “mom and pop” producers that time and time again write books and create DVDs that are more than worthy of your support. Please consider placing your own order for
