seen them coupled up, so it would provide some unique photo opportunities. And to really make it interesting, I wanted car No. 9000 (the first in the series) running with car No. 9111 (the last in the series). I thought it was a really cool, original idea. Then I started scanning slides from September 1990 and discovered I had ridden a two-car charter with the Philadelphia Chapter NRHS. And the two cars used were 9000 and 9111. Not only had I seen two cars coupled together before, but they were the very two I had thought would be a unique combination. Hmm. After a day of scanning I can’t wait to

The time from the late-1950s

until the mid-1990s were years of transition and decline of the SP’s influence in the west;

however, the photographs and extended captions presented

here emphasize the railroad in its former, healthy condition. With 223 photographs by

45 photographers, Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division presents a thorough look at SP’s main line and branch line operations from Dunsmuir to

Fresno, and from Sacramento to Ogden. The presentation illustrates the dramatic geographic and geologic

conditions through which the Southern Pacific’s various Sacramento Division lines were built, from pastoral

farming land, to deserts, to rugged mountains.

import the scans into Lightroom. It’s just like opening that fresh box of slides on the counter in the camera shop back in the old days. If I haven’t been paying attention to the scanner (and I usually don’t) I’m often surprised by what has come out of that day’s scanning. The temptation is always there to process “just a few” images, and that usually takes me well into the evening since there is always one more image I just have to process. If I’m really stumped as to where I was (my note-taking capabilities are not the best) I’ll post shots on Facebook and usually someone will recognize the location. Scanning the collection has been a ton of

fun. If there is one sad aspect about it, it’s the fact that in many instances a lot of these slides won’t be seen again — I’ll be working with the scans from this point forward. I hope whoever inherits my slide collection also gets the Lightroom catalog that goes with it; the slides have almost no information on them in most cases, while the scans have at least some basic keywording applied. Scanning slides has been a lot of fun, but

I do look forward to getting the process over with. Once the slides are all scanned, there are a million projects I want to do with them. Perhaps scanning is the journey and the projects are the destination, but getting there sure has been fun. — S.B.

Department of Corrections Last month we ran a feature on the closing

of the Maine Eastern written by Joey Kelley. I met Joey through night photo sessions he co- ordinates for the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine, and Joey is an okay guy. So it is quite embarrassing that we mis- spelled Joey’s name on the byline on his story. Our apologies to Mr. Kelley. — S.B.

Changes in the News

When R&R was acquired by White River Productions in 2014 we inherited the news section from RAILROADS ILLUSTRATED, and with it we picked up a lot of talented news colum- nists. The task of keeping all those columnists organized fell to our news wrangler, Kevin Snyder. Each month Kevin would gather the news and do the initial edits on a pretty tight deadline before forwarding it to us. Kevin was also our Union Pacific columnist. This month is Kevin’s last as wrangler, as other commit- ments outside the hobby are occupying more of his time (isn’t that true for a lot of us?). We thank Kevin for his dedicated service to both us and RRI. Associate editor Otto Vondrak will be assuming the duties of wrangler (the official title is news coordinator, but I think “wrangler” is a better description). We also have a couple of changes with our

news contributors. Chase Gunnoe is stepping down as our CSX columnist and Sayre Kos is leaving his post as BNSF and Canadian Na- tional columnist. Michael Berry will be taking over the CN news, while Jonathan Quigley will be covering most of the U.S. as our BNSF, UP, and CSX columnist. We welcome Michael and Jonathan aboard and thank Chase and Sayre for their service. — S.B.

Winterail in Oregon

If you’re heading to Corvallis for the first Winterail in Oregon on March 19, you’ll cer- tainly want to have this issue along with you. Scott Lothes does a fine job covering the old network of Southern Pacific branches oper- ated by Portland & Western

that offer nu-

merous photographic opportunities for the visiting fan. One of the highlights of the P&W is Cornelius Pass, located northwest of Port- land. If your travels take you to the Portland area, be sure to have a copy of the March 2015 R&R with Robert W. Scott’s cover story. Speaking of Winterail, just a reminder

that R&R is hosting the Corvallis Slide & Pizza Party at Corvallis High School on Fri- day night, March 18. Admission is $10 and includes pizza, pop, and entertainment. Food is served at 5:00 and the shows begin at 6:00. Tickets are available at the door only. As I write this, we still have a couple of

spots open for presenters on Friday night. Email me at editor@railfan.com if you are in- terested in presenting a 20-minute show. I hope to see you in Corvallis for pizza on Fri- day and the big show on Saturday! — S.B .
