Heradesign’s acoustic control reaches new heights

ity of Glasgow College opened the doors to its new £228 million city centre Riverside Campus this autumn. The campus houses teaching accommodation for the Nautical and Engineering departments and a new halls of residence for the College. Heradesign from Knauf AMF is installed in the state-of-the art Engineering Hall. This large expanse includes lathe workshops, welding areas and a dedicated working ships engine room. Heradesign ceiling panels were chosen because they comply with Building Regulation BB93: acoustic design of schools

and provide outstanding acoustic control in this potentially noisy space. The Engineering Hall is a multi-functional environment with machinery operating and a number of tutorials taking place at the same time. The hall could be a difficult area in which to control disruptive noise, but because Heradesign panels provide Class A sound absorption they help control the ambient sound level, reduce reverberation and increase speech intelligibility. This helps create a productive learning environment for both lecturers and students.

In the Engineering Hall, the ceiling is fitted above the lighting and ventilation system to give the roof area a utilitarian look. Heradesign can also incorporate ventilation and lighting in the same installation to reduce visual clutter. All Knauf AMF ceilings are fully demountable making access and maintenance to the services in the void quick and simple.

Heradesign is ideal for educational buildings because the panels offer long-lasting durability, have high impact resistance and provide excellent fire safety. 28
