so familiar. The bottom line is that advanced composites aren’t a passing fad; they’re not going away anytime soon, so if you plan to stay in the helicopter industry as a structures mechanic you need to embrace the technology. Learn all you can and — I can’t stress this enough — get training in the repair of these materials.
Greg Mellema entered Army aviation in 1985 and has been an Airframe & Powerplant mechanic since 1988. He holds an Inspection Authorization (IA) from the FAA and is an Assistant Professor of Aviation Maintenance Technology at Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University. Mellema’s experience spans 30 years working on both civilian and military aircraft, in peace-time
and in combat, designing, building and repairing both metallic and advanced composite aircraft structures. Mellema works for the U.S. Army’s Prototype Integration Facility (PIF) at the Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) where he founded the PIF Advanced Composites Lab in 2010. Since then, Mellema and his team have received numerous accolades for developing prototype advanced composite parts, training, and repair techniques for Army aviation. Mellema holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aeronautics and a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is currently completing the requirements for his Ph.D. in Aviation. Mellema is a noted author and the U.S. Army’s subject matter expert in advanced composite manufacturing and repair. He is the current chairperson of the composites sub-committee at SpaceTEC & CertTEC off ering the industry’s only performance-based composite certifi cation. Mr. Mellema is also a member of the guidance board for the Department of Energy’s Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) as well as an active member of SAMPE, ACMA, and PAMA.
