urleypalmerflatt, the independent mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy, has completed work on 195-197 King’s Road for Martins Properties(Chelsea) Ltd. The 1,200sq m Grade II listed building, within the Cheyne Conservation area of Chelsea, has been entirely refurbished. The project comprises a ground floor and basement retail unit with a large garden and six luxury one bedroom apartments. It is located on the historic road which was once used as a private access route for King Charles II.
The apartments have been retrofitted with
a number of building services, including high efficiency heating and cooling provided by air source heat pumps, mechanical ventilation units with heat recovery systems and metered cold water supplies via a basement boosted cold water tank and pump. Hot water supplies are provided by unvented electric storage cylinders. Additional building services installed include high efficiency LED lighting, new power distribution, fire detection, and security and access alarm systems. Originally licensed in 1810 to the Six Bells public house, the basement and ground floor retail space of the refurbished project
has been let to Caprice Holdings restaurant group, and is now home to The Ivy Chelsea Garden.
Due to the historic nature of the building, Hurleypalmerflatt, working with Paul Davis and Partners, the project architects, and Richardsons Ltd, the main contractor, ensured that the project was carried out with great care to avoid impact on the retained listed components. Marcus Kelly, Associate Director, Building
Services, Hurleypalmerflatt said: “The intricate care needed when working around the listed features, such as room ceilings and decorative cornices, meant that work on
Courtney Thorne completes nurse call installation at Medway hospital
ireless nurse call specialist, Courtney Thorne has installed its 08 System at Medway Maritime Hospital’s 20-room pre- occupation care unit (POCU), bringing the total number of wards utilising the system at the hospital to 10.

The installation is part of a rolling programme of nurse call upgrades at the Kent hospital which serves 400,000 patients per year.
The move to a wireless system began four years ago when the
Medway NHS Foundation Trust decided to phase out its hard- wired system in favour of a wireless system that could adapt more readily to its needs. Courtney Thorne was
appointed sole supplier following a rigorous procurement process and is now specified as the required system for all refurbishment projects.
The POCU installation involved a total of 38 room units and follows several other recent Courtney Thorne wireless nurse call upgrade schemes, including
the 24-bed Bronte Ward and the 28-bed Sapphire Ward. The upgrades will continue as and when routine works take place at the hospital, with Courtney Thorne taking responsibility for all custom design, installation and programming.
A hospital spokesman said:
“Four years on, the feedback on the Courtney Thorne system from patients, nurses and management staff has been excellent and the company continues to respond to the specific needs of the hospital.”
this Grade II listed building required a strategic and well planned approach in finding practical engineering solutions which removed any impact on historic elements.” Hurleypalmerflatt provided mechanical and electrical engineering services on the project, and advised on sustainability, energy strategy and codes, and building regulations.
Providing the perfect climate for puppies
A
tlantic Boilers have provided a new electric boiler system for precise control of heating at a new puppy “whelping
zone” at The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition in Leicestershire.
The centre is owned by Mars Inc. and conducts scientific research into pet care, nutrition and behaviour working with a variety of animals. As the new area focusses on puppies, specific heating requirements are needed using a reverse heat pump air-conditioning system which is supported by two Atlantic Multi-Elec Standard 120kW electric boilers. The boilers, which were installed by M R S, of Melton Mowbray, are silent, requiring minimum maintenance and are particularly suited to these air conditioning systems as, in stable manner, they top-up the space heating demand whenever required.
